국문 초록

이 연구는 다국적기업이 출현함으로써 현지국 공장 유지에 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 분석하는데 목적이 있다. 이 연구는 아일랜드의 제조공장을 중심으로 하여 분석함으로써 다국적기업의 기술파급이 현지국 제조공장에 긍정적인 효과를 초래하고 있음을 도출하였다. 이러한 분석을 위해서 연구에 사용된 모델은 콕스 모델을 이용하여 다국적기업의 기술파급 효과의 본질을 규명하고자 하였다. 이 연구의 분석결과는 다국적기업의 기술파급은 고급기술산업의 경우에 현지국의 토착적인 공장 유지에 활력적인 역할을 하고 있음을 증명하였고, 현지국의 저급기술부문에서는 다국적기업과 현지국의 토착기업이 서로 경쟁하고 있다는 사실을 보여 주고 있다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the effect of the presence of multinational enterprises on plant survival in the country. I postulate that multinational enterprises can impact positively on plant survival through technology spillovers. I study the nature of the effect of multinationals using a Cox proportional hazard model which I estimate using plant level data for Irish manufacturing industries. Our results show that the presence of multinationals has a life enhancing effect only on indigenous plants in high tech industries, suggesting the presence of technology spillovers. In contrast, multinationals compete with each other in low tech sectors in the host country.
