인종주의 그림책에서 나타난 타자와 환대윤리

국문 초록

오늘날 한국은 다양한 인종이 함께 사는 사회로 진입했으며, 다양한 인종의 사람들을 어떻게 대할 것인가 하는 문제에 직면하고 있다. 본 연구는 Levinas 철학을 바탕으로 그림책 속 인종주의가 어떠한지 살펴보고자 한다. 본 연구는 인종주의 그림책을 대상으로 질적 내용분석을 실시하였으며, 이를 통해 타자는 누구이며, 그들의 삶이 어떻게 그려지는지, 그리고 어떤 방식으로 환대를 받고 있는지를 분석하였다. 첫째, 그림책 속 타자는 주류 사회의 동화되지 않으려 하며, 동일함으로 거부하거나 역경 속에서도 주체적인 존재로 나타났다. 또한 주류 집단은 타자를 공간으로 분리하거나 혐오 배제하였고, 이러한 상황에서 타자는 자신의 상황을 얼굴로 호소하였다. 둘째, 그림책에서 어떤 등장인물은 배제 받고 소외된 타자에 대해 받아들이고, 맞아들이는 타자에 대한 책임을 갖는 윤리적 태도를 보였다. 따라서 인종이 담긴 그림책은 유아들에게 차별과 배제가 아닌 타자를 배려하고 존중하는 것을 돕고, 유아를 위한 환대 윤리의 가능성을 제기한다. 무엇보다 인종 그림책은 글과 그림을 통해 타자가 얼굴로 호소하는 모습을 보여주며, 유아는 타자에게 공감으로 반응한다는 점에서 향후 그림책 출판은 다양한 인종의 등장인물이 함께 살아가는 새로운 가능성을 모색해야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

Today, South Korea has entered a society where people of different races live together and is facing the problem of how to treat people of different races. The purpose of this study is to examine racism in picture books based on Levinas' philosophy. This paper conducted a qualitative content analysis of picture books that deal with racism, examining who is portrayed as the “other” how their lives are depicted, and how they are portrayed as hospitable. First, the other in the picture book try not to be assimilated into mainstream society, either rejecting it as the same or appearing as independent beings even in the face of adversity. On the other hand, the dominant group segregates the other by space or excludes them with hostility, and in such a situation, the other appeals to their situation with their face. Second, the characters in the picture books demonstrated an ethical attitude of accepting marginalized others and taking responsibility for their hospitality. Therefore, picture books address race to help young children consider and respect others rather than discriminate and exclude, and raise the possibility of ethics towards other for children. Above all, picture books about race highlight the appeal of ‘the other’ through both text and illustrations, as children naturally respond to one another with empathy. In the future, picture book publishing should explore new possibilities for portraying characters of different races living together in society.
