국문 초록

체육과의 본질은 언어적으로 규정하기 어려운 개념이다. 왜냐하면, 모든 언어적 개념에는 명확한 경계가 없기 때문이다. 여기서 말하는 개념이란 사람들이 특정한 대상이나 아이디어에 대해 이해하고 설명하는 사고(思考)의 단위를 의미하며, 때로는 널리 공유된 ‘보편적인 관념’으로도 볼 수 있다. 우리가 어떤 개념을 규정할 때 어려움을 겪는 가장 큰 이유는, 모든 언어적 개념(단어)이 동일한 기표(記表)를 사용하더라도, 개인의 경험에 따라 각기 다른 언어적 의미, 즉 다양한 기의(記意)로 해석될 수 있기 때문이다. 예를 들어, ‘아버지’라는 단어가 개인마다 다른 의미를 지니는 것처럼, ‘신체활동’ 역시 사람들의 경험과 이해에 따라 다르게 해석될 수 있다. 따라서 체육과의 본질을 고정된 언어적 개념인 ‘신체활동’으로 정의한 기존의 시도는 다양한 해석을 충분히 반영하지 못해 그 본질을 온전히 설명하지 못한다. 그러므로 체육과의 본질을 단순히 ‘신체활동’으로만 제한하지 않고, 체육 교과가 존재하는 궁극적인 이유나 목적을 중심으로 새롭게 정의될 필요가 있다. 즉, 체육 교과를 통해 달성하고자 하는 신체적, 심동적, 인지적, 정의적 목표들을 포괄하는 더 폭넓은 교육 목적을 고려한 확장된 개념으로 정의해야 하며, 이를 위한 깊은 사고와 통찰이 우리에게 요구된다.

영문 초록

The essence of physical education is a concept that is difficult to define linguistically. This is because all linguistic concepts lack clear boundaries. A concept, in this context, refers to a unit of thought used to understand and explain specific objects or ideas, and it can sometimes be regarded as a widely shared “universal notion.” The main reason we face difficulties in defining a concept lies in the fact that all linguistic concepts(words), even when using the same signifier (記表), can be interpreted with different meanings, or signifieds(記意), depending on individual experiences. For example, the word “father” holds different meanings for each person, just as “physical activity” can be interpreted differently based on people's experiences and understandings. Therefore, previous attempts to define the essence of physical education using the fixed linguistic concept of “physical activity” fail to fully capture its diverse interpretations and do not adequately explain its true essence. It is necessary, therefore, to define the essence of physical education not merely as “physical activity” but rather based on the ultimate reason or purpose for the existence of the physical education discipline. Specifically, it should be defined through an expanded concept that encompasses the broader educational objectives—physical, psychomotor, cognitive, and affective goals—that physical education aims to achieve. This calls for profound thought and insight to ensure a comprehensive understanding of its essence.
