국문 초록

『겁쟁이 윌리(Willy the Wimp)』는 세계적으로 사랑받는 Anthony Browne의 윌리시리즈를 탄생시킨 작품이다. 주인공 윌리는 Anthony Browne의 내면의 자아를 상징하며 윌리의 삶의 모습이나 방식은 작가가 생각하는 아동의 삶을 반영한다. 본 연구에서는 Vanhoozer의 문화해석 방법론에 따라 『겁쟁이 윌리』를 평론하였다. 텍스트 자체의 세계에서는 이 그림책에 Darwin의 진화론과 실존주의적 부조리가 반영되어 있음이 나타났으며, 텍스트 뒤의 세계를 조사함을 통해 Anthony Browne에게 실존주의와 초현실주의가 영향을 미쳤으나 이 역시 Darwin의 진화론에 그 기초를 두고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 그러나 텍스트 앞의 세계인 독자의 반응과 평가를 살펴본 결과, 독자들은 내용에 대한 이해가 부족하더라도 작가의 명성을 신뢰해 그림책을 긍정적으로 평가하는 것을 알 수 있었다. 결론적으로 그림책 『겁쟁이 윌리』에는 다윈의 진화론적 세계관이 투영되어 있으며, 이는 모든 의미와 가치를 부정하는 의미론적 허무주의로 귀결시킨다는 것을 알아냈다. 본 연구는 Anthony Browne의 사상적 기저가 Darwin의 진화론에 있음을 밝혔다는 의의를 가진다. 그러나 성인 독자는 이를 알아채지 못하고, 이 그림책이 아동에게 교육적으로 좋은 그림책이라고 평가하고 있다. 하지만 본 연구는 독자의 반응을 살피는 텍스트 앞 세계에서 인터넷 서평만을 가지고 분석을 하였기에 한계를 지닌다. 그리하여 본 연구는 성인 독자의 도서 선택과 평론에 윤리적 책무가 있음을 시사하며, 성인 독자들의 읽기 역량에 관한 심층 분석에 대한 후속 연구를 제안하고자 한다.

영문 초록

『Willy the Wimp』 is the work that gave birth to the globally loved Anthony Browne’s Willy series. The main character, Willy, symbolizes Anthony Browne’s shadow self, and Willy’s lifestyle or way of life reflects what the author thinks of the children’s life. In this study, 『Willy the Wimp』 was reviewed according to Vanhoozer’s cultural interpretation methodology. Through the world of the text itself, Darwin’s evolutionary theory and existentialist absurdity ideas, that existentialism and surrealism influenced Anthony Browne by examining the world behind the text, are seen, and through the analysis of the world ahead of the text, readers found that even if they lacked an understanding of the content, they trusted the artist’s reputation and evaluated the picture books positively. As a result, it is revealed that Darwin’s evolutionary worldview penetrated this picturebook 『Willy the Wimp』. Furthermore, it is found that Darwinian theory leads to a semantic nihilism that denies all meanings and values. This study has the significance of revealing that Anthony Browne’s ideological basis lies in Darwin’s theory of evolution. On the other hand, adult readers were not aware of this and evaluated it as an educational picture book for children. However, this study has limitations because it analyzed only with Internet book reviews in the world in front of the text that examines the reader’s response. Therefore, this study suggests that adult readers have ethical responsibilities in choosing and reviewing books, and suggests a follow-up study on in-depth analysis of adult readers’ reading competencies.
