타자의 얼굴을 마주하는 다문화 교실: ‘불가능한 환대’ 윤리와 유아교육에의 함의

국문 초록

본 연구는 데리다(Derrida)의 불가능한 환대 개념을 중심으로 다문화교육 현장에 적용할 수 있는 환대의 실천 가능성과 한계를 탐구하고자 하였다. 절대적 환대와 조건적 환대의 긴장, 그리고 레비나스(Lévinas)의 ‘타자의 얼굴’을 이론적 토대로 삼아, 이주배경 아이들을 맞이하는 교실의 윤리적 의미를 재구성하였다. 또한 소포클레스의 오이디푸스가 보여주는 이방인에 대한 대응과 안티고네가 보여주는 법과 정의의 경계에서 택한 윤리는 제도적 환대가 직면하는 한계를 상징한다. 제도와 법의 구조 속에서 무조건적인 절대적 환대는 원칙적으로 실현될 수 없고 조건적 환대만이 가능하다. 그러나, 교실이라는 일상적이고 관계 중심의 미시적 공간에서는 무조건적 환대가 가능하다. 교사는 제도의 규범과 행정 절차를 존중하면서도, 교실에서 마주하는 낯선 아이를 있는 그대로 받아들이는 윤리적 결단을 실천할 수 있다. 무조건적 환대가 통용될 수 없는 환대의 불가능성에 대한 역설이 교실 안에서의 작은 환대를 실천할 수 있게 한다. 교실 내 권력 구조를 성찰하며, 제도 밖 관계 형성의 장을 확장하는 ‘작은 환대’를 실천할 것을 제안한다. 이러한 실천은 절대적 환대와 조건적 환대의 간극을 줄이며, 불가능한 환대를 가능한 환대로 전환하는 출발점이 될 수 있다. 본고는 우리나라의 유아다문화교육이 지속적인 환대의 윤리에 대한 사유와 실천의 장을 토대로 이루어져야 함을 드러내고자 하였다. 이같은 실천이 가능할 때, 교실은 타자와의 진정한 만남과 변화를 만들어가는 공간으로 재정의될 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This study explores the practical possibilities and inherent limitations of applying Derrida’s concept of the ‘impossible hospitality’ to multicultural education contexts. Grounded in the tension between unconditional and conditional hospitality, as well as Lévinas’s notion of the ‘face of the Other’, the study reinterprets the ethical significance of welcoming children from migrant backgrounds into the classroom. Sophocles’ Oedipus, which reveals the ways strangers are confronted, and Antigone, which embodies the ethics chosen at the boundary between law and justice, serve as symbolic references to the limits faced by institutional hospitality. While absolute hospitality cannot be realized within the structures of law and policy—leaving only conditional hospitality possible—unconditional hospitality becomes attainable in the everyday, relational micro-space of the classroom. Teachers, while respecting institutional norms and administrative procedures, can enact the ethical decision to receive unfamiliar children as they are. The paradox of the impossibility of hospitality enables the practice of ‘small hospitality’ within the classroom, prompting reflection on its power structures and expanding spaces for relationships beyond institutional constraints. Such practices can narrow the gap between absolute and conditional hospitality, turning impossible hospitality into a possible one. This article intends to demonstrate that multicultural early childhood education must be based on a foundation of continuous reflection and practice on the ethics of hospitality. When this becomes possible, the classroom can be redefined as a space for genuine encounters with the Other and for transformative change.
