국문 초록

연구목적: 본 연구는 비언어성 학습장애(NVLD)의 핵심 특성 및 이들과 관련된 각종 논쟁에 대해 확인하고, 학교와 임상 현장에서 이들을 선별 및 진단하기 위한 방안을 제언하고자 한다. 연구방법: NVLD의 특성 및 진단과 관련된 쟁점을 다룬 수십 년 간의 문헌들을 종합 및 고찰하여 시사점을 도출하고자 하였다. 연구결과: 첫째, 연구자들은 시공간 결함이 NVLD의 핵심 특성이라는 점에 대해서는 대체로 동의해 왔다. 그러나, 이들을 자폐스펙트럼장애 혹은 ADHD와 구분하기 위해서는 실행 기능, 소근육 운동기능, 중앙응집기능, 사회적 기능 등 논쟁의 여지가 있는 특성들에 대해서도 확인해 보아야 한다. 둘째, NVLD의 핵심 특성에 대해 보다 명확하게 진단하기 위해서는 이들이 지닌 약점뿐만 아닌 강점도 함께 파악하여야 하며, 보편적으로 활용될 수 있는 선별 및 진단 검사를 개발하는 것이 필요해 보인다. 결론: 이러한 결과에 따라 NVLD를 다른 신경발달장애 범주와 구분하고 명확하게 진단하기 위해 연구 결과에서 제시된 시사점을 다시금 강조하였다.

영문 초록

Purpose: This article focused on the main features of Nonverbal Learning Disorder(NVLD) and proposed methods for diagnosing the group in school and clinical settings. Method: Decades of previous research on identifying debatable features of NVLD and diagnosing them were reviewed and synthesized. Results: First, researchers agreed that visuospatial weakness was one of the main features of NVLD, although the other debatable aspects of this group, including executive function, fine motor skills, central cohesion, and social functioning, were also important in distinguishing NVLD from Autism Spectrum Disorder or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Second, when diagnosing core features of NVLD, identifying cognitive strengths and weaknesses and developing universal screening and diagnostic tools will be crucial. Conclusion: The results were discussed again, focusing on differentiating NVLD from other neurodevelopmental disorders and future directions for their proper diagnosis.
