국문 초록

본 연구는 16~17세기 갤리언 무역을 통해 명 제국에 유입된 은화의 규모와 그것이 일으킨 구조적 경제변화를 분석하였다. 라틴아메리카 은광에서 생산된 대량의 은화가 스페인과 마닐라를 거쳐 중국에 집중적으로 유입되는 과정에서, 명 제국은 세계 은 시장의 핵심 수요처로 부상하였다. 연간 100~200톤에 달하는 임계 은화 유입량은 명대 경제의 안정성을 결정하는 핵심 변수로 기능하였으며, 일조편법 시행 이후 국가 재정의 70% 이상이 은화에 의존하는 구조가 확립되었다. 만리장성 재건축을 비롯한 대규모 국가사업들은 은화의 국내 유통 촉진과 지역경제 활성화에 이바지하였으나, 외부 은화공급의 급격한 감소는 인플레이션에서 디플레이션으로의 급속한 경제 전환을 초래하였다. 이러한 변화는 세수 감소, 사회불안정, 농민반란 등 왕조 붕괴의 구조적 요인으로 작용하였다.

영문 초록

This academic paper examines the structural impact of the galleon trade on the Ming Dynasty's economy during the 16th and 17th centuries. It focuses on how the massive influx of silver from Latin America, channeled through Spain and Manila, transformed the Ming Empire into a central player in the global silver market. The study argues that a critical annual silver inflow of 100-200 tons was vital for the stability of the Ming economy. The paper analyzes the multifaceted consequences of this silver-driven economy. While reforms like the Single-Whip Law (一條鞭法) and large-scale state projects such as the reconstruction of the Great Wall initially boosted economic activity, they also made the empire's fiscal system overly dependent on external silver supplies. The subsequent sharp decline in silver imports triggered a rapid economic shift from inflation to deflation, leading to severe fiscal crises, social unrest, and ultimately, the dynasty's collapse. By synthesizing research from Anglo-American, Iberian, and Chinese academic traditions, this analysis provides an empirical account of the complex dynamics of the Ming silver economy. It highlights the inherent risks of an economic structure reliant on foreign factors and the dual effects of institutional reforms. The study concludes by suggesting that a more nuanced, comparative-historical approach is needed to fully understand the long-term changes in the East Asian silver economy.
