디지털 공간과 온라인 예배에 대한 비판적 성찰 - 매개로서의 종교(religion as medium)를 중심으로

국문 초록

디지털 기술의 발전은 인류 사회에 많은 면에서 변화를 가져왔다. 디지털 공간에서의 종교적 실천의 가능성은 신학적 질문과 함께 가상 세계 에 대한 철학적 질문을 함께 던지고 있다. 특별히 코로나19 팬데믹 동안 한국교회는 방역 지침과 ‘사회적 거리두기’ 정책으로 인하여 ‘온라인 예 배’라는 새로운 경험에 마주하게 되었다. 이로써 한국교회는 디지털 신앙에 대하여 머리가 아닌 몸으로 먼저 배운 셈이다. 팬데믹 상황이 호전됨 에 따라, 온라인 예배에 대한 혼란은 줄어들었지만 그 여파는 아직도 진행 중이다. 초기의 화두는 두 가지로 분류되었다. 당장 온라인 예배를 ‘어떻게’ 드릴 수 있을지에 대한 기술적인 논의가 하나이고, 다른 하나는 온라인 예배가 과연 ‘온전한’ 예배인가에 대한 염려 섞인 논쟁들이 주를 이루었다. 이제 온라인 예배는 ‘새롭지만 당연한 일상’이 되었다. 일부에서는 온라인 예배와 나아가 온라인 교회에 대한 관심도 높아지고 있다. 온라인 교회에 대한 기술적 간극이나 신학적 논쟁은 시간을 두고 해결될 문제이지만, 정작 한국의 개신교회(이후 한국교회)가 놓치고 있는 것은 바로 상징의 실종 혹은 타락이다. 이 글에서는 개신교에 대한 이미지가 이미 노후하고 배타적이거나, 심지어 세속적이기까지 한 상황 속에서, 한국교회는 무엇으로 ‘거룩함’을 드러내고 소통할 것인가에 대해 다루고자 한다. 이를 위해서, 먼저 디지 털 공간의 특징을 현실의 연장된, 그러나 뒤틀린 공간으로 살펴볼 것이 다. 이어서 디지털 공간의 몸과 감각의 의존성에 대해 살필 것이다. 마지막으로, 온라인 예배 혹은 디지털 신앙의 맥락에서 그리스도의 몸된 교 회의 변화와 역할에 대해 제안할 것이다

영문 초록

Digital technology has changed our society in many ways. Among them, the Korean church faced a new experience of 'online worship' due to the quarantine guidelines and 'social distancing' policies. As the pandemic situation improved, the confusion decreased; but the debate on online worship is still ongoing. The initial issue was classified into two aspects. First, there was a practical discussion on media and technology—how to provide online worship service for a congregation; and the other was mainly concerned debates about whether online worship was a 'proper' service. Now, online worship has become a new normal for Christians at least in Korea. Some are also increasingly interested in online worship and, furthermore, online churches. Technical gaps or theological debates about online churches are a problem to be resolved over time. However, I argue that the real problem for the Korean Protestant Church regarding the debates is the depravity of symbols. Online worship in digital space interrelates our material world. Religious experience in digital space happens in the process of interaction with participant’s memory, including the symbolic image of church in a society. In this article, in a situation where the image of the Korean church is already old, exclusive, or even secular, I will emphasize the recovery of symbol as “Korean Church”. I argue that religion is mediated and represented not only in digital space but also in real life. To this end, I will first consider the characteristics of digital space as an extended and twisted space of reality. Then, I will look at the interdependence of the body and senses in digital space. Finally, I will suggest a recovery of a living image of church, focusing on the concept of religion as medium.
