숨밭 김경재의 ‘대승적 민중신학’ - 민중신학 50년에 대한 회고와 오늘의 민중신학을 향한 제언

국문 초록

본 논문은 숨밭 김경재가 말년에 던진 ‘대승적 민중신학’에 대한 아이디어를 발전시키는 것이다. 숨밭 김경재의 신학을 제한된 지면에서 일일 이 열거하는 것은 불가능하다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그의 사상을 한마디로 요약하면 세상과 담을 쌓고 폐쇄된 종교로 전락한 한국 개신교를 향해 ‘대승적 그리스도교’를 주장하면서 열린 종교로의 전환을 촉구하였다는 점이다. 김경재는 한국신학의 지형에서 민중신학이 아닌 문화신학자로 분류된다. 세계에 내세울만한 가장 한국적인 신학이 민중신학이라고 할 때 이는 한국이라는 독특한 정치적, 역사적 상황속에서 나왔다고 볼 수 있다. 그렇다면 민중신학은 대표적인 한국의 문화신학이라 할 만하다. 이런 시각에서 바라볼 때 문화신학자 김경재의 민중신학을 향한 비평은 민중신학 내부에서 제기되는 그것보다는 보다 큰 틀에서의 메타비평이 가능하다는 점에서 의의가 있다 하겠다. 본문의 첫 장은 민중신학의 지난 50년에 대한 회고인데 민중신학이 이룩한 성과에 대한 주례사적 비평보다는 각 시대마다 지녔던 민중신학의 성과와 한계에 주목할 것이다. 그 다음 장은 ‘문화신학과 민중신학 만남’ 이다. 김경재는 문화신학과 민중신학이 서로 다른 신학이 아니라 동전의 양면처럼 한국적 상황과 문화속에서 나온 쌍생아이고 서로 간 길항 적 작용을 하는 관계라 주장한다. 이러한 해석학적 순환과 융합을 통해 숨밭은 민중신학에 새로운 활기를 불어넣고자 하였다. 그것의 결과로 등장한 것이 김경재의 ‘대승적 민중신학’ 발언인데 본론의 후반부에서 집중적으로 다루어 질 것이다. 요약하면 본고는 민중신학 출범 50주년을 맞는 현시점에서 민중신학의 지평을 확장하는 숨밭의 ‘대승적 민중신학’을 고찰하고 그것이 갖는 신학적 함의를 정초하는 것이라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper is to develop the idea of 'Mahayana Minjung Theology' that Kim Kyung-jae developed in his later years. It is impossible to give a comprehensive account of the theology of Kim Kyung-jae in one paper. Nevertheless, to sum up his thoughts we can say that he urged Korean Protestantism, which has built walls with the world and has fallen into a closed minded stance as a religion, to shift to a more open mind set, insisting on “Mahayana Christianity.“ Kim Kyung-jae is classified as a cultural theologian rather than a minjung theologian in the topography of Korean theology. When Minjung theology is the most Korean theology that can be put forward in the world, it can be said that it came from the unique political and historical situation of Korea. If so, Minjung theology deserves to be called a representative Korean cultural theology. From this point of view, cultural theologian Kim Kyung-jae's criticism of Minjung Theology is meaningful in that meta-criticism is more possible in a larger framework than in one raised within Minjung Theology. The first part of this paper is a retrospective of the past 50 years of Minjung theology, which will focus on the achievements and limitations of Minjung theology in each era rather than positive criticism of the achievements of Minjung theology. The next part is an examination of 'Encounter of Cultural Theology and Minjung Theology,' a thesis in which Kim Kyung-jae says cultural theology and minjung theology are not different theologies, but are like two sides of the same coin. Minjung theology is an inevitable product of the Korean situation and culture. Kim Kyung-jae tried to revitalize stagnant Minjung theology through dialogue between Minjung Theology and Cultural Theology. What emerged as a result is Kim Kyung-jae's ' Mahayana minjung Theology' remark, which will be the focus of in the latter part of this paper. In summary, this paper examines Kim Kyung-jae's “Mahayana minjung Theology,” which expands the horizon of Minjung Theology, and lays the foundation for its theological implications at the present time, which marks the 50th anniversary of Minjung Theology.
