슈베르트 이후로 바울의 감사 단락에 대한 신약학자들의 연구는 주로 감사의 자료(source), 형식(form), 그리고 기능(function)에 초점이 맞추어져 왔고, 이 세 가지 요소들에 대한 다음과 같은 정의가 널리 수용되었다: (1) 자료: 바울 감사의 자료는 그리스-로마의 서신 관습(Greco-Roman epistolary conventions)에서 유래되었다. (2) 형식: 바울 감사는 서신의 형식적 요소들에 근거한 “전형적인” 형식을 가지고 있다. (3) 기능: 바울 감사의 주된 기능은 본론에서 다루어질 주제를 미리 예고하는 예시적(foreshadowing) 혹은 서신적(epistolary) 기능이다. 하지만 슈베르트 이후로 계속되어 온 세 가지 초점에 대한 이러한 전제들은 다양한 방식으로 비판을 받으며 재고를 요청받게 되었다. 따라서 본 연구는 먼저 그간 바울의 감사 연구의 중심을 이루어 왔던 세 가지 요소들과 그것들의 전제를 재평가하고, 슈베르트 이래로 간과되었던 ‘내용’이라는 요소에 좀 더 집중할 것을 제안하고자 한다. 첫째, 바울의 감사가 헬라적, 유대적 자료들을 참조했을지라도 궁극적으로 바울의 감사는 바울에 의해 창조적으로 형성된 것이다(자료). 둘째, 바울은 특정한 형식에 얽매이지 않으며, 수신자들의 상황에 따라 자유로운 형식으로 하나님께 감사한다(형식). 셋째, 이러한 바울의 감사는 다양한 기능들을 수행하는데, 하나님께 감사하며 영광을 돌리는 송영적 기능도 포함한다(기능). 넷째, 바울 감사의 주요한 요소인 내용, 즉 주제로서의 감사의 중요성을 다시금 인식하고 집중해야 한다(내용).

영문 초록

Since Schubert, New Testament scholarship on Paul’s thanksgiving paragraphs has focused primarily on the source, form, and function of the thanksgiving, and the following definitions of these three elements have been widely accepted: (1) Source: The source of Paul’s thanksgiving is derived from Greco-Roman epistolary conventions. (2) Form: The Pauline thanksgiving has a “typical” form based on the formal elements of the letter. (3) Function: The primary function of the Pauline thanksgiving is foreshadowing, or epistolary, as it foreshadows the subject matter to be addressed in the body of the letter. However, these three emphases, which have persisted since Schubert, have been criticized in various ways and called for reconsideration. Therefore, this study will first reevaluate the three elements that have been central to the study of Paul’s thanksgiving and their assumptions, and propose to focus more on the element of content that has been overlooked since Schubert. First, Paul’s thanksgiving may have drawn on Hellenistic and Jewish sources, but ultimately Paul’s thanksgiving was creatively shaped by Paul (source). Second, Paul’s thanksgiving is not bound to a particular form, but is free to be shaped by the circumstances of the recipients (form). Third, Paul’s thanksgiving fulfills a variety of functions, including the doxological function of giving thanks and glorifying God (function). Fourth, we must recognize and focus on the importance of the content, one of the most important elements of Paul’s thanksgiving, which is the theme of thanksgiving (content).
