국문 초록

이 논문은 프랑스에서 종교적 박해를 피해 영국으로 이주한 위그노 난민들의 정착과 교회 공동체 형성을 중심으로, 17-18세기 영국 사회에서 위그노의 존재와 역할을 고찰한다. 특히 런던을 중심으로 기존에 존재했던 프랑스 개혁파 교회 공동체들을 중심으로 다룬다. 16세기부터 이주한 프랑스 개혁파 교회 성도들은 영국 사회 내에서 사회적 종교적 동화의 과정 가운데 프랑스인으로서 개혁파 성도로서 정체성을 지켜왔다. 이런 교회의 역량은 17세기 후반 새로운 대규모 난민들을 수용하는데 있어 런던의 프랑스 교회가 큰 역할을 한 것에서 드러난다. 이런 상황과 과정에서 교회와 정부의 관계는 긴밀하게 이루어졌다. 이를 통해 위그노들이 단순한 난민이 아니라, 영국 사회와 교회 안에서 신앙의 정체성과 전통을 유지하면서도 점진적으로 영국화되어 가는 과정과 그들의 능동적 역할을 살핀다. 이를 위해 런던에 있던 전통적 교회인 스레드니들 스트리트 교회와 좀 더 영국에 동화된 사보이 교회의 사례를 중심으로, 이들 교회가 위그노 신자들의 종교적·사회적 통합에 어떤 역할을 했는지 분석한다. 특히 그들을 모교회로 하여 런던을 중심으로 생겨났던 영국의 프랑스 교회들과 그들의 정착과 생존은 런던의 교회들의 중요한 기능을 알 수 있게 하고, 당시 난민들이 런던 중심으로 다시 모일 수밖에 없었던 사실도 우리에게 알게 한다. 본고는 이러한 논의를 통해 17세기 후반 대규모 프랑스 난민들의 수용에서 행한 프랑스 개혁교회들의 역할과 난민 공동체의 적응에 대한 사례를 제시한다.

영문 초록

This study examines the presence and role of Huguenot refugees in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century English society, focusing on their settlement and the formation of church communities after fleeing religious persecution in France. Particular attention is given to the French Reformed congregations in London, which had already existed prior to the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. From the sixteenth century onward, French Reformed believers who had migrated to England sought to preserve both their identity as French and as Reformed Protestants, even while undergoing processes of social and religious assimilation within English society. The strength of these churches became evident in the late seventeenth century, when London’s French churches played a major role in receiving and integrating a large influx of new refugees. In this context, the relationship between church and government developed closely and significantly. This study explores how the Huguenots were not merely passive refugees but active participants who, while maintaining their religious identity and tradition, gradually became Anglicized within both society and the church. Focusing on the traditional Threadneedle Street Church and the more Anglicized Savoy Church, it analyzes how these congregations contributed to the religious and social integration of Huguenot believers. Moreover, the establishment and survival of French churches throughout England, with London as their center, highlight the crucial function of these congregations, while also revealing why refugees inevitably gravitated back to London. Through this investigation, the paper presents a case study of the role played by French Reformed churches in the reception of large numbers of refugees in the late seventeenth century and the adaptation of refugee communities within English society.
