국문 초록

본 논문은 16세기 후반 스코틀랜드 장로교회의 핵심 인물로 평가되는 앤드류 멜빌에 대해 형성된 ‘멜빌 전설’의 역사적 흐름과 그 해체 과정을 고찰하는 연구이다. 멜빌에 대한 평가는 동시대부터 19세기에 이르기까지 장로교주의에 대한 입장에 따라 긍정적인 평가와 부정적인 평가가 공존해 왔지만 그럼에도 그가 중요한 인물이라는 사실은 양 진영 모두에서 공유되어 왔다. 특별히 17세기에는 멜빌을 장로교를 대표하는 핵심 인물로 삼아서 장로교 전체를 비판하려는 반대자들의 노력으로 인해 지지자들보다는 오히려 반대자들에 의해 멜빌의 중요성이 강조되었다. 멜빌의 중요성과 논의를 이끄는 주도권은 19세기 장로교 목사인 토마스 맥크리가 쓴 멜빌 전기를 통해 멜빌 지지자들에게로 돌아왔는데, 맥크리의 글은 후대에 ‘멜빌 전설’이라고 불리는 흐름을 시작하였고 20세기 중반까지 ‘멜빌 전설’은 더욱 강화되고 발전되었다. 그러나 20세기 후반부터는 ‘멜빌 전설’을 해체하는 연구가 주를 이루고 있는데, 그 속에서 멜빌은 사실상 장로교 운동의 핵심 인물이 아니었으며 그리 중요하지 않았던 인물로 평가절하 되었다. 본 논문은 현재의 이러한 멜빌 연구의 흐름 속에서 앤드류 멜빌의 삶과 행적들이 장로교주의의 강조점과 매우 부합함을 주목하며 이를 통해 장로교주의의 실행자라는 멜빌의 새로운 중요성을 강조한다. 이를 통해 장로교주의자 앤드류 멜빌 연구의 새로운 길을 제시하고, 영웅적 인물 중심의 역사 서술에서 벗어난 새로운 장로교 역사 서술을 제안한다.

영문 초록

This paper explores the historical development and subsequent deconstruction of the so-called “Melville Legend” surrounding Andrew Melville, a figure widely regarded as a central leader of the Scottish Presbyterian Church in the late 16th century. Evaluations of Melville have varied from the time of his contemporaries through the 19th century, reflecting differing attitudes toward Presbyterianism—some viewing him positively, others negatively. Nevertheless, both supporters and detractors consistently acknowledged his significance. Notably, in the 17th century, it was Melville’s opponents, rather than his allies, who most strongly emphasised his importance, portraying him as the representative figure of Presbyterianism in order to criticise the movement as a whole. The significance of Melville and the leadership of discourse surrounding him shifted back to his supporters through the biography written by the 19th-century Presbyterian minister Thomas M’Crie. M’Crie’s work initiated what later came to be known as the “Melville Legend,” a narrative that deepened and developed further until the mid-20th century. However, from the latter half of the 20th century, scholarly attention turned toward deconstructing this legend, during which Melville came to be re-evaluated as not, in fact, a central figure in the Presbyterian movement and as someone of comparatively limited historical importance. In this context, the present study re-examines Melville’s life and actions, highlighting how closely they align with key principles of Presbyterianism. By doing so, it reasserts Melville’s importance as a practical implementer of Presbyterian ideals. The paper thereby seeks to open new avenues for research on Andrew Melville as a Presbyterian figure and proposes a fresh historiographical approach to Presbyterian history that moves beyond hero-centred narratives.
