국문 초록
김백평은 1919년 3·1운동 당시 독립선언서를 나눠주고 만세 시위에 참여한 공로를 인정받아 1990년 건국훈장 애족장을 수여받았다. 2009년에는 미국에 안장된 유해가 국립현충원으로 봉환된 인물이면서도 친나치 행적에 논란이 있다.
그는 1900년 여수에서 경제력과 영향력 있는 집안의 아들로 태어났다. 부친 김한승과 둘째형 김우평 등은 친일파였고, 김백평과 셋째형 김관평 등은 민족운동에 참여하였다. 그는 1919년 경성고등보통학교 4학년 재학 중 3·1운동에 참여하였다. 이로 인해 1년 2개월간 옥고를 치른 후 고향으로 내려와 1921년에는 ‘맞돕회’라는 청년회를 조직하여 계몽운동 및 민족운동을 전개하였다.
일제의 감시로 인해 1922년 일본 동경으로 건너가 사회학을 공부하고, 1925년 독일로 가서 항일독립단체인 유덕고려학우회에서 잡지 『ヘ―バ―』발간 및 국치기념식 담화, 회장으로도 활동하며 독립운동을 이어나갔다.
한편 1927년부터 베를린대학에서 인류학과 생물학을 공부하고, 이후 의과대학에 진학해 산부인과 전문의로서 활동하였다. 그는 카이저 빌헬름연구소, 폴란드 크라쿠프 등에서 나치의 인종이념에 대한 과학적 지원을 제공하였다. 나치가 만든 준군사조직인 ‘국가사회주의 비행군단’의 일원이었을 것으로도 추정된다. 1950년대 미국으로 이주해서도 인간을 실험대상으로 하는 우생학 연구를 이어간 것으로 보인다. 그는 1990년 12월 17일 91세로 미국에서 사망하였다. 그 해 3·1운동 관련으로 그는 건국훈장 애족장을 수여받았다. 2009년 대한민국임시정부 수립 90주년을 맞아 그의 유해는 해외에서 국내로 들어와 봉환식 후 국립대전현충원에 안장되었다.
여수 출신 독립운동가 김백평의 생애와 활동을 살펴본 결과, 항일민족운동의 모습과 친나치 행적이 함께 나타나 그의 이중적인 면을 볼 수 있었다.
영문 초록
Kim Baek-pyeong was awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation in 1990 in recognition of his contribution to distributing the Declaration of Independence and participating in the Manse demonstration during the March 1st Movement in 1919. In 2009, he was a person whose remains were enshrined in the United States and returned to the National Cemetery, but there is controversy over his pro-Nazi activities.
He was born in Yeosu in 1900 as the son of a wealthy and influential family. His father Kim Han-seung and his second brother Kim Woo-pyeong were pro-Japanese, while Kim Baek-pyeong and his third brother Kim Kwan-pyeong participated in the national movement. He participated in the March 1st Movement in 1919 while attending the fourth grade of Gyeongseong High School. As a result, he spent one year and two months in prison before returning home and organizing a youth group called “Matdopoe(A group that promotes helping each other)” in 1921 to conduct enlightenment and national movements.
Due to Japanese surveillance, he went to Tokyo, Japan, in 1922 to study sociology. In 1925, he went to Germany and published a magazine 『ヘーばー』 of the anti-Japanese independence group 'Yudeokgoryeohaguhoe(Association of Korean Students in Germany)', and also delivered a speech at the national memorial ceremony. He continued his independence movement as the group's president.
Meanwhile, from 1927, he studied anthropology and biology at the University of Berlin, and later entered medical school and worked as a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology. He provided scientific support for Nazi racial ideologies at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute and Krakow, Poland. It is estimated that he was a member of the quasi-military organization 'National Socialist Flying Corps' created by the Nazis. Even after moving to the United States in the 1950s, he would have continued eugenics research using humans as subjects. He died in the United States on December 17, 1990, at the age of 91. That year, he was awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation in connection with the March 1st Movement. In celebration of the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in 2009, his remains were brought back from abroad and enshrined in the Daejeon National Cemetery after a repatriation ceremony.
As a result of examining the life and activities of Kim Baek-pyeong, an independence activist from Yeosu, the appearance of the anti-Japanese national movement and the pro-Nazi activities appeared together, showing his dual side.
