국문 초록

본 연구는 영국 왕실 차문화의 기원을 둘러싼 통념에 대한 역사적 타당성을 검토하는 데 목적을 두고 있으며 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 영국 내 차의 인식은 17세기 초부터 시작되었으며, 1650년대에는 일부 계층에서 음용되고 있었고, 1660년 왕실에 헌상된 기록도 존재한다. 이는 브라간자의 입궁 이전부터 차가 이미 알려져 있었음을 시사한다. 둘째, 차 수입량은 17세기 중반까지 미미하였으며, 본격적인 확산은 1690년대 후반 청나라와의 무역 재개 이후였다. 이는 차문화의 확산이 개인보다는 공급 조건 등 외적 요인에 의해 좌우되었음을 보여준다. 셋째, 브라간자와 차문화의 직접적 연관성을 입증할 사료는 부족하며, 관련 서사는 주로 19세기 이후 형성된 문학적 상상에 기초하고 있다. 결론적으로, 영국 차문화는 개인의 주도보다 국제무역 환경과 사회적 조건에 의해 형성된 복합적 결과로 이해해야 한다.

영문 초록

This study critically examines commonly held beliefs regarding the origin of tea culture in the British royal court. The results are as follows. First, awareness of tea in England began in the early 1600s, and by the 1650s, tea was consumed by certain social groups. The first documented royal offering of tea dates to 1660, indicating its presence before the arrival of Catherine of Branganza. Second, tea import volumes remained minimal until the late 17th century. Significant growth occurred only after 1685, coinciding with renewed trade with Qing China. This suggests the spread of tea culture was influenced more by external trade factors than by individual agency. Third, no primary sources substantiate Catherine’s leading role in popularizing tea. Most narratives emerged in the 19th century and were based on literary embellishment rather than historical fact. In conclusion, the establishment of tea culture in Britain is better understood as the result of complex factors—international trade, social trends, and cultural discourse —rather than the influence of a single royal figure.
