A Study on the Application of Service Quality Theory to Catholic Parish Ministry: Focusing on Text Mining Analysis of Church Documents

This study attempted an integrated study to view various activities of the church community, that is, parish pastoral activities, carried out under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to realize God's plan of salvation, from a management perspective based on the basic philosophy of practical theology. In particular, in order to examine whether 'service', a concept familiar to believers in modern society, can be theoretically applied to pastoral activities, a representative area of ??practical theology, this study analyzed official Catholic documents and Korean Catholic documents defining church pastoral activities and interpreted the service quality theory (SERVQUAL) into applicable parts and supplementary points, thereby seeking the possibility of an integrated approach between practical theology and business administration and suggesting a new direction and practical possibility of transformation for Korean Catholic parish pastoral activities that have stagnated since COVID-19. This study analyzed a total of 126 documents, including church documents and papal documents translated into Korean with the approval of the Holy See, and pastoral materials from the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Korea and diocesan levels published from 2000 to 2023. Text mining techniques were used to analyze the major documents of the Catholic Church. Text mining techniques were used to analyze the theoretical basis of church documents, and the main keywords and topics extracted from TF-IDF and topic modeling were applied to service quality measurement attributes to distinguish them, thereby establishing the pastoral direction of the Catholic Church after COVID-19. By confirming that the 10 topics extracted from topic modeling can be distinguished according to the five attributes of the service quality model, namely reliability, tangibility, responsiveness, certainty, and empathy, the believers who are accustomed to 'service' in social and economic activities identified areas that they felt were lacking in parish pastoral activities, and based on this, whether parish pastoral activities can adapt to changes in the times, that is, whether they can be interpreted in a direction that adapts to modern society from the perspective of the aggiornamento of the Second Vatican Council, was confirmed. Therefore, if we introduce ‘hospitality management’ or ‘service management’ that applies service quality theory to specific pastoral activities carried out in parishes, the Catholic Church’s parish pastoral activities will be able to promote change and growth.
