본 연구는 직업상담 서비스 관련 전공 박사학위 도전의 목적과 동기, 학위과정에서의 경험과 지속의 원동력 그리고 학위 취득 이후 자신의 삶과 일터에서 박사학위의 의미와 가치를 어떻게 구성하는지 고찰하기 위하여 해당 전공 박사 취득자14명을 대상으로 심층면담하여 CQR을 활용하여 분석하였다. 연구결과는 5개의 영역, 15개의 범주, 34개의 하위범주로드러났으며, 구체적으로는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 박사과정 진학 동기는 ‘직업적 성장’, ‘배움 자체에 대한 열망’, ‘치유와 변화에 대한 희망’으로 나타났으며, 둘째, 박사과정 수행의 경험은 ‘성장과 회복의 시간’, ‘다중역할 균형의 어려움’, ‘한계를 넘어선 몰입의 시간’, ‘학생들의 다양한 기대치’로 드러났다. 셋째, 박사학위 취득의 원동력은 ‘자신에 대한 믿음과 의지’, ‘주변의 지지와 지원’으로, 넷째, 박사학위의 가치는 ‘자기 성장과 효능감 향상에 기여’, ‘전문성을 기반으로 직업적 기회의 확대’, ‘학위의 의미변화’, ‘직업상담 서비스 관련 전공 학위 가치의 차별성’으로 나타났다. 특히 직업상담 서비스 관련 전공박사학위만의 가치는 실용성, 확장성, 사람을 중심에 둔 사명감과 소명의식 고취 그리고 독창성과 희소성으로 분석되었다. 마지막으로 박사학위 성취를 위한 실천적 지혜는 ‘학위 취득을 위한 현실적 전략’, ‘학위의 가치 창출과 확장을 위한 노력’으로 드러났다. 이러한 연구결과를 토대로 다양해지고 있는 직업상담 서비스 분야에서 전문성과 실무 역량을 갖춘 고급 인재 양성을 목표로 하는 박사과정의 내실화를 도모하고 향후 관련 전공 박사과정을 고려하는 성인 학습자에게 시사점을 제공하고 이를 위한 제언을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

This study aims to explore the purpose and motivation behind pursuing a doctoral degree in vocational counseling services, the experiences during the doctoral program, the driving forces that sustained participants through the process, and how they construct the meaning and value of the doctoral degree in their lives and workplaces after graduation. Using Consensual Qualitative Research(CQR), in-depth interviews were conducted with 14 individuals who had earned a doctorate in this field. The analysis revealed 5 domains, 15 categories, and 34 sub-categories, as follows. First, the motivations for entering the doctoral program were identified as ‘professional growth’, ‘a passion for learning itself’, and ‘a hope for healing and transformation’. Second, the experiences during the doctoral process included ‘a time of growth and recovery’, ‘challenges of balancing multiple roles’, ‘a time of immersion beyond personal limits’, and ‘diverse expectations from students’. Third, the driving forces behind completing the doctoral degree were ‘self-belief and determination’ and ‘support and encouragement from others’. Fourth, the perceived value of the doctoral degree was constructed through ‘contributions to self-growth and enhanced efficacy’, ‘expansion of career opportunities based on expertise’, ‘evolving meanings of the degree’, and ‘the unique value of the doctoral degree in vocational counseling services’. In particular, the distinctive value of a doctoral degree in vocational counseling services was found to lie in its ‘practical applicability’, ‘interdisciplinary potential’, ‘sense of mission and vocational calling centered on human service’, and ‘originality and rarity’. Finally, the practical wisdom for achieving the doctorate was captured in ‘realistic strategies for degree completion’ and ‘efforts to generate and expand the value of the degree’. Based on these findings, the study offers implications for strengthening doctoral programs aimed at cultivating highly competent professionals with both expertise and practical capabilities in the increasingly diverse field of vocational counseling services. Suggestions are also provided for adult learners considering doctoral studies in this area.
