A Comparison of Demographic and Psychosocial Characteristics between Employed and Unemployed South Korean High School Graduates with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

국문 초록

연구목적: 본 연구는 한국의 중등특수교육을 담당하는 전문가와 정책입안자들에게 지적장애 및 발달장애를 가진 학생들을 위한 중등특수교육에서의 전환교육에 중요한 의미를 부여하는데 도움을 주기 위하여 지적장애 및 발달장애를 가진 고졸 취업자와 미취업자간의 인구통계학적 특성의 차이와 심리사회적 특성에 차이가 있는지를 알아보고자 하였다. 연구방법: 본 연구 자료는 한국장애인고용공단의 2015년 장애인고용패널조사(PSED) 데이터를 추출한 것이다. PSED는 장애인들에 대한 간헐적인 질문을 통해 자료를 수집하였다. 데이터의 신뢰성, 정확성 및 편의성을 높이기 위해 면접관이 노트북 컴퓨터로 직접 설문조사를 실시하기 위해 각 참가를 방문하는 컴퓨터 지원 개인 인터뷰(CAPI)를 사용하였다. 연구결과 및 결론: 본 연구결과에 따르면, 취업한 고등학교 졸업자들은 미취업한 고등학교 졸업자들에 비해 남성이 많았으며, 대학을 졸업했으며, 장애인 보조수당을 받지 않는 사람들이 더 많았다. 또한 이들은 더 나은 사회적 기술을 가졌으며, 일상생활에 도움이 필요하지 않는 경우가 더 많았다. 심리사회적 특성을 살펴보면, 취업한 고등학교 졸업생들은 일반적으로 삶에 더 만족하였으며, 건강상태와 여가생활에서도 더 높은 만족감을 보였다. 또한 자기존중감에서도 미취업한 고등학교 졸업자들보다도 훨씬 높게 나타났다. 마지막으로, 본 연구는 지적장애 및 발달장애학생들을 위한 전환교육 실천에 대한 제언을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

Purpose: Considering that an increased attention has been raised on successful movement from high school into adulthood and an employment is highly associated with the quality of life for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities(IDD), it is important to equip individuals with IDD with the skills necessary to secure meaningful work after high school as an essential outcome of education. Method: This study was designed to compare demographic and psychosocial characteristics between employed and unemployed South Korean high school graduates with IDD using the 2015 panel survey of employment for the disabled. Results: This study found that the employed participants were more likely to be male, college graduates who do not receive supplemental security income benefits. The employers had better social skills and did not need help with daily activities in comparison to those who were unemployed. Also, the employed individuals reported to be more satisfied about life in general and had higher self-esteem than those who were unemployed. Conclusion: Implications for future research and training to improve transition practices specific to students with IDD are provided. The findings of this study will help give secondary special educators and policy makers important implications on transition education in secondary education for students with IDD in South Korea.
