영문 초록

This study is to investigate how the beginner Korean language learners who speak Vietnamese perceive the Korean stops through perception experiments with an OpenSesame and a questionnaire. Subjects (6 female, 3 male) heard 108 stimuli consisting of Korean stops and then selected corresponding Korean phonemes. The results showed 383 (39.4%) perceptual errors from 972 response and the error rate is in the order of bilabial ≥ velar > alveolar consonants; fortis ≥ lenis > aspirated consonants and CV > VCV, but the combining vowels ‘a, i, and u’ did not significantly affect the perception of consonants. The Questionnaire on the phonological awareness showed that subjects transfer or reinterpret L2 phoneme with a similar L1 and split or coalesce L2 phonemes which are absent in L1. These results indicate that aspirated consonants are easy to perceive whereas it is difficult to distinguish between fortis and lenis due to the inadequate L2 perceptual categorization. Therefore, learners should be instructed to be conscious of distinctive acoustic characteristics and allophonic phenomena in the phonological environment.
