국문 초록

현재 미국에는 약 200만 명의 재외한인이 거주하고 있다. 재미한인사회에서는 세대간의 정체성 갈등과 2세대들의 자존감 저조에 대한 걱정의 여론이 많다. 그러나 기존의 연구들은 이주 현황과 특성을 조사하거나 민족정체성의 실태를 파악하는 연구들이 주류를 이루었다. 이에 본 연구에서는 민족정체성에 영향을 주는 요인이 무엇인지를 알아보고, 민족정체성이 집단자존감에 어떤 영향을 미치는 지를 밝히고자 하였다. 본 연구의 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 영주권자이고, 2세대이며, 거주기간이 길고, 한국어를 주로 사용하며, 차별경험을 조금 느끼는 한국계 미국인들의 민족정체성이 높음을 확인하였다. 둘째, 민족정체성은 집단자존감에 긍정적인 영향을 미침을 확인하였다. 이러한 결과는 재외한인을 민족자산으로 활용하려는 정부나 기관들에게많은 실무적인 시사점을 제공해준다.

영문 초록

About 2 million Korean Americans are currently living in the United States. Intergenerational identity conflicts and low self-esteem of post-immigration generations are common concerns within the Korean American communities. Existing studies, however, focused mainly on investigating migration status, characteristics of migrants, or the status of ethnic identity of Korean Americans without fully exploring the determining factors for ethnic identity. In order to fill the gap, this study explores what the determining factors for ethnic identity are and how ethnic identity affects the collective self-esteem of Korean Americans. The two main findings from this study are as follows: First, this study confirmed five main determining factors for ethnic identity, which are permanent residency, second generation status, length of US residency, using Korean-language as a main language, and experience of minor racial discrimination. Second, ethnic identity has been confirmed to have a positive impact on collective self-esteem. The findings from this study provide multiple implications for the South Korean government and institutions to utilize overseas ethnic assets and resources.
