국문 초록

본고는 『무민은 채식주의자』에 수록된 동물화자 소설인 「날아라, 오딘」, 「무민은 채식주의자」, 「오늘의 기원」, 「랑고의 고백」과 황정은의 「묘씨생」을 통해 2010년대 이후 인간과 비인간종의 경계가 해체되고 착종되는 양상을 비교·분석한다. 『무민은 채식주의자』의 동물화자 소설은 전쟁에 동원되는 동물, 육식주의에서 ‘식용’으로만 인지되는 동물, 동물복지농장에서 생을 마감하는 동물, 동물원에 전시되는 야생동물에 주목하고 인간중심주의를 비판했다는 의의가 있다. 이 네 편은 인간과 동물의 관계를 성찰하고 관계 재편을 시도했음에도, 방법론의 측면에서 인간과 동물의 지배/피지배 관계를 전제하거나 취약성/잔혹성이라는 성질을 이분법적으로 대비하고, 동물에 대응되는 자연/인간에 대응되는 인위적 공간의 이분화에서 벗어나지 못함으로써 다시금 인간과 동물을 이분화한다. 반면 「묘씨생」은 자본주의의의 생태환경을 공유하는 가운데 독립적 삶을 영위하는 길고양이와 노인을 등장시키고, 길고양이의 시선으로 ‘동물-되기’를 하는 노인을 포착하게 함으로써 동물/인간의 이분법적 구분에서 벗어난다. 또한 「묘씨생」은 구체적 실체로서의 동물이 처한 삶과 소외되는 인간을 동시에 주목한다는 점에서 여타의 동물소설 및 동물화자 소설과 차이가 있다. 이 연구는 비판적 휴머니즘의 맥락에서 동물화자 소설을 분석하여 오늘날 동물담론의 현주소를 짚음으로써 동물화자 소설에 대한 학술적 논의의 토대를 마련했으며, 포스트휴먼 맥락에서 깊이 논의된 적 없는 「묘씨생」을 상세히 분석했다는 의의가 있다. 이로써 모든 것이 자본화되어 동물과 인간이 분리 불가능한 존재로 착종되고 있는 현실에서는 동물의 존재근거를 더는 반려가족화 현상에서만 찾거나 동물이 일방적으로 희생되고 있는 서사에서 인간을 분리해내는 것이 불가능함을 알 수 있었다. 또한 ‘말하는 동물’을 도입한 의인화 기법을 잘 활용한 텍스트로서 「묘씨생」은 동물로서의 인간을 취약하게 하는 자본주의의 생태의 비극이 역설적으로 보여주는 가능성을 드러내고, 독자차원의 사유와 실천까지 종용하고 있음을 확인하였다.

영문 초록

This paper explores how the borders between humans/nonhuman species are deconstructed today through the short stories featuring animal narrators in the 2010s. For this purpose, I critically review the four short stories “Fly, Odin,” “The Moomin is a Vegetarian,” “Today s Origin,” “Confession of Rango” in The Moomin is a Vegetarian and analyze Hwang Jeong-eun’s 2010 short story “Lives of Cats.” Appearance of animal tellers is the rhetorical strategies of anthropomorphism to evade the anthropocentrcism in representation, which are conducive to build the post-human/animal relationship. Above four short stories with animal narrators in The Moomin is a Vegetarian are meaningful in that they not only shed light on animals mobilized for war, animals recognized only as eating in meat-eating, healthy animals that have to end their lives at animal welfare farms, and wildlife displayed at zoos, but also criticise dichotomy between humans/animals. However, these narratives fail of the attempt of changing relationship between ‘superior’ human and ‘inferior’ nonhuman species. This is because in terms of methodology, by presuming dominating/dominant relationship between humans and animals or dichotomously contrasting the properties of vulnerability/cruelty. Eventually, they cannot escape from the dichotomy of animal/human and nature/culture. On the other hand, in “Lives of Cats”, deconstructs the dichotomy between humane human and nonhuman animals, as when a stray cat recounts how he/she and an old man survive by foraging for food in the capitalist environment, but live independently of each other. In addition, “Lives of Cats” differs from other animal novels and animal narrators’ short stories in that it simultaneously pays attention to the life of animals as a specific entity and the alienated humans. With effective use of rhetorical strategies of anthropomorphism, “Lives of Cats” shows possibility of the post-humans/animals even in the tragedy of capitalist environment. This study has significance in analyzing short stories with animal tellers in the context of critical humanism and pointing to the current state of animal discourse today. Through this, my work lays the foundation for academic discussion on fictional narratives with animal narrators and analyzed in detail “Lives of Cats” which has not been discussed in depth in the posthuman context. This study is able to find that it is impossible to find the basis of the existence of animals only in the phenomenon of familyization of companion animals, or to separate humans from the narrative where animals are unilaterally sacrificed in the reality where everything is capitalized and therefore animals and humans are inseparable. Next, the present analysis stresses animal narrators as anthropomorphic strategies is helpful to lower the boundaries between humans and animals. Finally, the old man’s “Becoming-Animals” caught by the cat’s eye of “Lives of Cats” requests readers to think of improving the quality of lives of all kinds of animals in “here and now” social surroundings.
