국문 초록

문익환 목사는 한국 현대사의 재야운동에서 매우 중요한 역할을 맡았다. 한국 재야운동의 지도자로 등장하기 이전 그는 신학자이자 목회자로서 조용한 삶을 살았다. 그는 특별히 성서 번역에 지대한 열의를 갖고 있었고, 1968년 이후 성서 공동 번역에 몰두하였다. 그 즈음부터 그는 시인으로서 이름을 알리게 된다. 문익환 목사의 삶이 전환되는 계기는 장준하의 죽음이었던 것으로 알려져 있다. 장준하의 죽음 이후 문익환은 1976년 3·1 명동 구국선언을 주도함으로써 재야운동의 지도자로 등장하게 되었고, 1994년 죽음을 맞이하기 전까지 한국의 민주화와 통일을 위한 운동의 중심에 서게 되었다. 그 까닭에 문익환 목사의 삶에서 신학자이자 목회자로서의 면모와 재야운동의 지도자로서의 면모는 질적으로 다른 것처럼 인식되어 왔다. 이 글은 신학자이자 목회자로서의 문익환의 삶에 초점을 맞추면서, 그 삶이 재야운동의 지도자로서의 삶을 형성한 밑바탕이었다는 점을 주목한다. 그의 삶의 양 측면은 단절되어 있다기보다는 연속되어 있다고 보는 것이다. 이를 규명하기 위해 이 글은 문익환 목사의 정신 세계를 형성한 계기들을 주목하고 그의 신학사상의 얼개를 그려보고자 한다. 나아가 그의 정신 세계를 형성한 모태인 한국 기독교계에 남긴 유산들을 재평가함으로써 목회자이자 신학자로서 그의 삶의 의의를 재조명한다.

영문 초록

Pastor Moon Ik Hwan played a very important role in the Korean contemporary Minjung movement. Before becoming a leader of the Korean Minjung movement, he lived a quiet life as a theologian and pastor. He had a great enthusiasm for the translation of the Bible, and since 1968 he had been engaged in that endeavour. From then on he becomes known as a poet. It is known that the moment of life conversion for Moon IkHwan was the death of Jang JunHa. Since then, Moon IkHwan has emerged as a leader in the Minjung movement by leading the March 1 MyungDong Declaration in 1976, and he was at the center of the movement for democratization and unification of Korea until his death in 1994. For this reason, the aspect of Moon Ik Hwan’s life as a theologian and pastor and the aspect of his life as a leader of the Minjung movement has been perceived as qualitatively different. This article focuses on the life of Moon IkHwan as a theologian and pastor, and notes that this vocation was the basis of his leadership in the Minjung movement. Both aspects of his life are seen as continuous rather than disconnected. In order to clarify this, this article examines the relationship between nationalism and Christian faith as two pillars of the mental world of Pastor Moon IkHwan, and also examines what he dreamed was to achieve in in light of those two factors. His dream of “love, justice, peace, and life” was the core of his theology. These core values formed his mental world. This article reexamines the significance of his life as a pastor and theologian by reassessing the legacy that he left in the Korean Christian world, a life of ministry that gave birth to his mental world.
