영재 자녀를 둔 어머니의 양육갈등 경험에 대한 현상학적 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 영재 자녀를 양육하는 어머니의 양육갈등 경험과 그 내재된 의미를 심층적으로 탐색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 K-WISC 검사 결과 지능이 상위 3～5%에 해당하는 13세～18세 영재 자녀를 둔 어머니 5명을 연구 참여자로 선정하고 심층 면담을 실시하였다. 자료 분석은 Giorgi의 현상학적 연구 방법을 적용하였으며, 그 결과 총 4개의 구성요소와 8개의 하위 요소가 도출되었다. 도출된 구성요소는 ‘비일반적인 특성에 대한 혼란’, ‘사회적 이해 부족으로 인한 어려움’, ‘헌신과 한계 사이의 역설’, ‘편견 속 고립의 수용’으로 나타났다. 연구 결과, 연구 참여자들은 편견이 지배하는 사회에서 고립된 채 홀로 양육의 어려움을 극복해 나아가는 과정에서 현실적 제약을 수용하며 자신의 양육역할을 재정립하고 자녀에 대한 새로운 통찰을 형성하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 중·고등학생 영재 자녀를 둔 부모의 양육갈등을 조명함으로써, 향후 실질적 지원 방안 마련 및 영재에 대한 사회적 편견을 재고하기 위한 기초자료를 제공한다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

This study aims to examine, in depth, the experiences of parenting conflict and their inherent meanings among mothers raising gifted children. To this end, five mothers of gifted adolescents aged 13 to 18, whose intelligence scores fall within the top 3–5% based on the K-WISC assessment, were selected as participants, and qualitative, in-depth interviews were conducted. Data were analyzed using Giorgi’s phenomenological research methodology, yielding four essential constituents and eight subcategories. The essential constituents identified were confusion regarding atypical characteristics, challenges arising from a lack of social understanding, the paradox between devotion and limitation, and acceptance of isolation within prejudice. The findings revealed that in a society dominated by prejudice, the participants endured the challenges of parenting in isolation, accepted practical limitations, redefined their parenting roles, and developed new insights into their children. This study is significant in that it sheds light on the parenting conflicts experienced by parents of gifted middle and high school students, thereby providing foundational data for developing practical support measures and reconsidering societal prejudices toward giftedness.
