국문 초록

본 연구는 종교 권력화가 예배 공간에 미친 영향을 분석하고, 19세기 미국 개신교 예배 공간의 변화를 중심으로 고찰한다. 기존 연구가 예배 공간을 부차적인 요소로 다룬 것과 달리, 본 논문은 예배 공간을 예배 변화의 핵심 요인으로 삼았다. 이를 위해 ‘공간의 종교 권력화’ 개념을 정립하고, 예배 공간이 종교 권력을 강화하는 역할을 한다고 주장한다. 19세기 미국 개신교 예배당은 성전 우상화와 성직주의 강화의 문제를 드러내며, 대형 교회에서 설교자 중심의 극장식 교회 형태로 변모했다. 이러한 경향은 한국 개신교에서도 나타나며, 19세기 미국 선교사들의 예배 공간 신학과 관련이 있다. 본 연구는 예배 공간 변화의 원인이 종교 권력 강화를 위한 시도였음을 밝히고, 한국 교회의 예배 공간 정체성 회복을 위한 기여를 한다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes the impact of religious power on worship spaces, focusing on the changes in 19th-century American Protestant worship spaces through the concept of ‘Frontier Worship.’ Unlike previous research that treats worship spaces as secondary elements, this thesis examines worship spaces as a central factor in the change of worship. To achieve this, the concept of ‘religious power in space’ is introduced, arguing that worship spaces not only embody religious power but also reinforce it. In 19th-century American Protestantism, the transformation of worship spaces led to the idolization of the church as a temple and the strengthening of clericalism, with large churches adopting a preachercentered, theater-like design. This trend is also observed in Korean Protestantism, closely linked to the worship space theology brought by 19th-century American missionaries. The study concludes that the changes in worship spaces were driven by efforts to enhance and maintain religious power and offers practical contributions to the recovery of worship space identity in the Korean church.
