에밀리 그래빗(Emily Gravett)의 포스트모던 그림책 특징: 메탈렙시스 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 에밀리 그래빗의 포스트모던 그림책을 대상으로 메탈렙시스의 특성을 탐색하는 데 있다. 분석 대상은 에밀리 그래빗의 『늑대들』(Wolves)과 『겁쟁이 꼬마 생쥐 덜덜이』(Little Mouse's Big Book of Fears)의 파라텍스트와 서사적·시각적인 메탈렙틱 장치를 바탕으로 포스트 모던 그림책 특성을 분석하였다. 연구결과 두 그림책들은 파라텍스트와 글과 그림에서 서사적·시각적으로 서사 층위의 경계를 넘나드는 다중적인 서사 구조인 메탈렙시스의 특징을 보여주고 있으며, 미장아빔과 트롱프뢰유 기법을 활용해 허구와 실제의 세계를 오가며 새로운 글과 그림의 의미를 추출하고 놀이성과 흥미를 제공하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 통해 에밀리 그래빗의 두 권의 포스트모던 그림책들은 메탈렙시스의 다층적인 구조의 서사를 읽으며 독자가 사전 지식과 경험에 따라 새로운 의미를 추출할 수 있는 기회를 제공하였고, 여러 층위를 넘나드는 메탈렙틱 장치의 다양성을 이해하며 독자의 상상력과 놀이에 영향을 미치는 매체임을 알 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to explore the characteristics of Emily Gravett's postmodern picturebooks on the basis of metalepsis. Wolves and Little Mouse's Big Book of Fears written by Emily Gravett were analyzed through paratext, narrative and illustrative metalepsis which disturb or break narrative boundaries. The result showed that there were various paratext, narrative and illustrative metaleptic transgressions of narrative structures by multiple narrative levels including mise-en-abyme and trompe l’oeil as the verbal and visual devices. The metaleptic devices of these two books were able to deduce the innovative meaning of words and pictures and create playfulness and interest blurring of the boundary between reality and fiction worlds. Therefore, the result of this study suggests that these two postmodern picturebooks not only provide opportunity drawing new meaning according to the readers’ background knowledge and experiences while reading multiple narrative structures, but also would be valuable reading materials improving the imagination and playfulness of children by understanding various metaleptic devices.
