본 논문은 19세기 미국의 대표적인 환원운동(Restoration Movement) 지도자인 알렉산더 캠벨(Alexander Campbell)의 침례신학이 교회 연합과 일치에 끼친 영향을 고찰한다. 당시 미국 교회는 교파 간 분열이 심각한 상황에 직면해 있었으며, 신학적 체계나 신비적 체험 중심의 신앙은 연합의 실질적 기초가 되지 못했다. 이에 캠벨은 사도적 전통, 곧 신약 성경의 가르침을 토대로 한 복음의 원형으로 돌아가 교회 일치를 시도하였다. 그는 ‘고대복음(Ancient Gospel)’의 회복을 강조하며, 특히 죄 사함의 방법으로서의 “침례”를 중심 신학으로 삼았다. 그의 침례신학은 교파를 초월한 공동의 실천으로서, 복음에 대한 순종 행위로 이해되며 그리스도의 몸에 참여하게 하는 신앙적 기초로 간주되었다. 캠벨은 침례를 통한 연합이야말로 교회 일치를 가능하게 하는 핵심적 실천이라 여겼으며, 침례의 실천적 통일이 교리의 차이를 넘어서는 연합의 기초가 될 수 있다고 주장하였다. 또한 그는 구원의 확신이 인간의 주관적 체험이 아니라 하나님의 말씀에 대한 순종이라는 객관적 근거 위에 세워져야 함을 역설하였다. 이러한 그의 입장은 당대의 감성 중심적 신앙과는 달리, 성경 중심적이고 실천 지향적인 연합운동의 특징을 나타낸다. 본 논문은 먼저 초대교부들부터 종교개혁가들에 이르기까지의 세례신학의 역사적 발전을 간략히 개관한다. 그 후 캠벨의 침례신학이 어떤 배경에서 형성되었는지, 그리고 그의 환원운동 사상 속에서 어떻게 체계화되었는지를 분석한다. 마지막으로 그의 침례신학이 실제로 교회의 연합과 일치에 어떠한 실천적 기여를 했는지를 평가한다.

영문 초록

This study examines the influence of Alexander Campbell’s baptismal theology on church unity and ecumenism within the context of the 19th-century American Restoration Movement. During a time of intense denominational division in the United States, Campbell did not ground Christian unity in elaborate theological systems or mystical religious experiences. Instead, he called for a return to the apostolic tradition and the “Ancient Gospel,” which he believed represented the original message of salvation as taught by the apostles. Central to this gospel was the practice of baptism for the remission of sins. Campbell understood baptism not merely as a symbolic act, but as an essential response of faith and obedience, through which believers participated in the body of Christ. He asserted that a shared understanding and practice of baptism could transcend denominational boundaries and serve as a practical foundation for Christian unity. Furthermore, Campbell emphasized that the assurance of salvation should rest not on subjective emotional experiences but on objective obedience to God’s Word. His perspective offered a biblically grounded and action-oriented approach to overcoming division in the church. This paper first provides a brief historical overview of baptismal theology from the early Church Fathers to the Reformers. It then explores the theological development of Campbell’s understanding of baptism within the context of his Restorationist ideals. Finally, it evaluates the extent to which Campbell’s theology contributed to his ultimate goal: the visible unity of the church through the restoration of New Testament Christianity.
