국문 초록

이 연구의 목적은 입원 중인 정신장애 소수자의 권리보장 및 정체성 인정과 관련된 주제들을 탐색하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 Patton(2002)의 주제분석(thematic analysis) 방법을 활용하였으며, 연구참여자는 정신병원에 입원 중인 7명의 조현병 환자들이다. 분석 결과, ‘권리보장’과 ‘정체성 인정’이라는두 영역으로 구분되는 상위주제와 이에 따른 하위주제들이 도출되었다. ‘권리보장’ 영역에서는 사회적 주변화, 사회적 격리, 사회적 이동의 단절이라는세 가지 상위주제가 도출되었고, ‘정체성 인정’ 영역에서는 인정 주체의 부재, 존재의 타자화, 인정 기대치의 충돌이라는 세 가지 범주의 상위주제가나타났다. 각 상위주제는 구체적인 하위주제들로 세분화되었다. 연구참여자들은 자신의 권리를 향유하기를 원했으며, 있는 그대로의 정체성을 인정받기를 바랐다. 이러한 결과는 정신장애 소수자의 권리보장과 정체성 인정에대한 학문적·실천적 논의에 중요한 시사점을 제공한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine issues related to the protection of rights and the recognition of identity among minorities with mental disabilities who are hospitalized in psychiatric institutions. Employing a thematic analysis approach grounded in Patton (2002), this qualitative inquiry focuses on the lived experiences of seven individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia, all of whom were inpatients at a psychiatric hospital at the time of the study. The analysis revealed two overarching thematic domains: the protection of rights and the recognition of identity. Within the domain of rights protection, three major themes emerged: social marginalization, social isolation, and disruption of social mobility. In the domain of identity recognition, the study identified three principal themes: absence of recognizing agents, othering of existence, and conflict in recognition expectations. Each theme was further elaborated through specific sub-themes that captured nuanced aspects of participants' experiences. Participants consistently expressed a desire to exercise their fundamental human rights and to be acknowledged as individuals with inherent identity and dignity. These findings offer significant contributions to ongoing academic and policy discussions regarding the rights and identity recognition of minorities with mental disabilities, highlighting the urgent need for systemic and discursive transformation within mental health institutions.
