국문 초록

본 논문은 헤르만 헤세의 『수레바퀴 아래서』를 중심으로 청소년기의 심리적 위기를 문학이 어떻게 조명하고 치유의 가능성을 제공할 수 있는지 고찰하였다. 오늘날 우리 사회의 청소년들은 경쟁 중심의 교육 환경과 사회적 기대 속에서 심리적 압박과 정체성 혼란을 겪고 있으며 이는 깊은 내면의 갈등으로 이어진다. 본 연구는 이러한 현실을 한스 기벤라트라는 인물의 서사를 통해 형상화한『수레바퀴 아래서』를 분석함으로써 문학이 청소년의 심리와 삶을 어떻게 비추고 반영하는지를 탐색하였다. 문학은 단순한 이야기 전달을 넘어 독자가 자신의 내면을 성찰하고 정체성을 탐색하도록 돕는 감정적·인식적 통로로 작용할 수 있다. 『수레바퀴 아래서』는 청소년기의 고통과 위기를 사실적으로 조명한 작품으로, 본 논문은 이 작품이 독자로 하여금 자신의 현실을 새로운 시각에서 바라보고 삶의 방향을 성찰할 수 있도록 이끌 수 있는 효과적인 매체가 될 수 있음을 밝혔다. 아울러 본 연구는 유사한 성장 서사를 가진 청소년 독자에게 문학이 내면의 상처를 직면하고 수용하는 과정을 통해 치유와 성장을 가능하게 하는 통로가 될 수 있음을 논의하였다. 『수레바퀴 아래서』의 주인공 한스의 이야기는 이러한 문학적 가능성을 구체적으로 보여주는 서사적 증거이며 오늘날 청소년들에게 깊은 성찰의 거울이 될 수 있음을 보여주었다. 마지막으로 본 논문은 문학이 청소년기의 심리적 혼란과 내면의 갈등을 겪는 이들에게 정서적 위로와 자기 이해의 기회를 제공하며 삶을 다시 바라보고 재구성할 수 있는 성찰적 계기를 마련해줄 수 있음을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

This study explores how literature sheds light on the psychological crises of adolescence and offers possibilities for healing, with a particular focus on Hermann Hesse’s Beneath the Wheel. In contemporary society, adolescents often experience psychological pressure and identity confusion due to competition-driven educational environments and societal expectations, which can lead to profound inner conflicts. Through an analysis of Beneath the Wheel and the narrative of its protagonist, Hans Giebenrath, this study investigates how literature reflects and illuminates the inner world and lived experiences of young readers. Literature, beyond its function as a medium for storytelling, can serve as an emotional and cognitive conduit that enables readers to reflect on their inner selves and explore their identities. Beneath the Wheel portrays the pain and turmoil of adolescence with realism, and this study demonstrates that the work can serve as an effective medium through which readers reframe their realities and reflect on the direction of their lives. Furthermore, the study discusses how literature, when encountered by adolescent readers with similar developmental narratives, can become a channel through which they confront and accept inner wounds, enabling emotional healing and personal growth. The story of Hans exemplifies the therapeutic potential of literature and serves as a mirror for meaningful self-reflection among contemporary youth. Ultimately, this study suggests that literature provides emotional comfort and opportunities for self-understanding to adolescents in times of crisis, offering a reflective space in which they may reexamine and reconstruct their lives.
