국문 초록

인류는 오랫동안 장신구를 통해 정체성과 사회적 위치를 표현해 왔으며, 현대에 들어서는 희귀성과 물질적 가치를 넘어, 제작자의 내면과 예술적 의도를 담는 수단으로 그 기능이 확장되고 있다. 본 연구는 아시아 문화에서 생명과 공동체의 상징인 쌀을 장신구의 재료로 활용하여, 일상적 소재가 어떻게 정체성과 문화적 소속감을 시각화하는 상징적 매체로 전환될 수 있는지를 탐구한다. 쌀의 문화적 의미를 고찰하고, 이를 활용한 현대장신구 작가들의 사례를 분석하였으며, 연구자 본인의 작업에 나타나는 반복과 집적, 색채를 통한 조형 실험과 수행적 접근을 통해 쌀의 예술적 가능성을 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 쌀은 단순한 식재료를 넘어, 개인의 서사와 감정을 담는 예술적 매체로 확장될 수 있음을 제시한다.

영문 초록

Throughout human history, jewelry has served as a medium for expressing identity and social status. In contemporary contexts, its function has expanded beyond rarity and material value to encompass the maker’s inner world and artistic intent. This study explores how rice—symbolizing life and community in various Asian cultures—can be used as a material in jewelry, transforming an everyday substance into a symbolic medium that visualizes identity and cultural belonging. The research examines the cultural significance of rice and analyzes the works of contemporary jewelry artists who incorporate rice into their practice. In addition, the study investigates the artistic potential of rice through the author’s own work, focusing on formative experimentation involving repetition, accumulation, and color, as well as a performative approach. Through this process, the study suggests that rice can transcend its conventional role as a staple food and be reimagined as an artistic medium that conveys personal narratives and emotional expression.
