국문 초록

이 연구는 공예를 인류 문명 초기부터 이어져 온 사물 제작의 연속선상에서 이해하는 것이 아니라, 근대 산업화가 초래한 사회·문화적 변화에 대한 비판적 대응으로 발명된 개념적 범주로 파악하여, 19세기 말 공예의 탄생 배경과 탄생 과정 그리고 발명된 공예의 개념적 속성 분석을 목표하였다. 연구를 통해 당시 사회의 주류 담론을 윤리적으로 비판하며, 대안을 모색한 사상적·실천적 흐름 속에서 공예가 탄생했음을 확인했다. 즉, 공예는 19세기 말 영국에서, 근대 산업사회와 예술지상주의에 대한 비판 사상을 바탕으로 윌리엄 모리스와 미술공예운동의 실천을 통해 발명된 개념이자 장르이다. 한편, 탄생 당시의 공예가 내포한 성격을 이해하기 위해, 모리스의 소예술론을 중심으로그 속성들을 추출하였다. 그 결과, 공예는 발명되면서부터 생활예술, 주체적 노동, 수공, 전통과 버내큘러, 민중예술, 질적 추구, 사회저항운동으로 범주화할 수 있는 일곱 가지의 특성을 가진 영역이자 개념으로 발명되었음을 확인할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This study aims to understand craft not as a continuation of object-making practice in human history, but as a conceptual category invented in critical response to the social and cultural changes brought by modern industrialization. It analyzes the background of craft’s emergence and development, as well as the conceptual characteristics of the invented craft. This study reveals that craft emerged within an ideological and practical movement that ethically criticized the dominant discourses of the time and sought alternatives. Craft is a concept and genre invented in late 19th-century Britain, based on critical perspectives on modern industry and fine arts, through the practices of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement. Furthermore, by analyzing the characteristics embedded in craft at the time, centered on Morris’s theory of lesser arts, seven attributes were identified: art for everyday life, integrated labor, handcraft, tradition and vernacular, art for all, high quality and social movement. These findings confirm that craft was invented as both a conceptual and practical domain encompassing these elements.
