불교 문화 콘텐츠 정체성 정립 기초 연구 - 힙불교 현상과 강진 백련사 사례를 중심으로

국문 초록

현대 문화를 활용한 콘텐츠 산업이 디지털 기술의 발달과 다양한 플랫폼을 중심으로 고부가가치를 형성하고 있다. 한국의 국가유산과 종교 분야에서도 예외는 아니며, 특히 불교는 ‘힙불교’ 현상으로 젊은 세대에게 새롭고 매력적인 문화 코드로 소비되며 대중성을 확보하고 있다. 그러나 이러한 ‘힙불교’ 현상이 일시적인 유행에 그치지 않고 지속 가능한 발전을 이루기 위해서는 한국전통 불교문화에 대한 심도 있는 연구와 현대적 접근이 요구된다. 본 연구는 고려 후기 불교 개혁 운동인 백련결사의 역사적 의미를 현대적으로 재조명하고, 백련결사의 발상지인 강진 백련사의 풍부한 문화 자원을 현 ‘힙불교’ 트렌드와 접목하여 새로운 문화적 가치를 창출할 방안을 모색하고자 한다. 이를 위해 백련결사의 대중 지향적 개혁 정신과 현대 ‘힙불교’ 현상의 대중 소통 및 실천 강조라는 공통점을 분석하고, 강진 백련사의 국가유산을 활용한 구체적인 문화 콘텐츠 개발 방안을 제시한다. 본 연구는 현대 문화 트렌드 속에서 전통 불교 유산의 가치를 재발견하고 계승하는 데 기여하며, 강진 백련사와 같이 풍부한 국가유산을 보유한 우리나라의 천년 고찰이 ‘힙불교’ 트렌드에 단순히 편승하기보다는 고유한 스토리를 바탕으로 차별화된 콘텐츠를 개발하여 대중에게 제공하기를 기대한다. 즉, 본 연구에서 제안된 문화 콘텐츠 활성화 방안은 다양한 관심사를 가진 방문객과 현 문화 콘텐츠의 트렌드를 고려하여 맞춤형 경험을 제공하고 강진 백련사의 사회·문화적 가치를 제고하는데 의의를 둔다.

영문 초록

The content industry, leveraging modern culture, is creating high added value driven by the development of digital technology and diverse platforms. This trend is no exception in the fields of South Korea's heritage and religion, and Buddhism, in particular, is gaining popularity as “Hip Buddhism,” consumed by the younger generation as a new and attractive cultural code. However, for this “Hip Buddhism” phenomenon to achieve sustainable development rather than remaining a temporary trend, in-depth research into traditional Korean Buddhist culture and a modern approach are required. This study aims to re-examine the historical significance of the Baeknyeon Gyeolsa Buddhist reform movement in the late Goryeo Dynasty in a contemporary context. It also seeks to explore ways to create new cultural value by integrating the rich cultural resources of Gangjin Baeknyeon temple, the birthplace of the Baeknyeon Gyeolsa, with the current “Hip Buddhism” trend. To this end, the study analyzes the commonalities between the public-oriented reform spirit of the Baeknyeon Gyeolsa and the emphasis on public communication and practice in the modern “Hip Buddhism” phenomenon. It also proposes specific cultural content development strategies utilizing Gangjin Baeknyeon temple's heritage. This study contributes to rediscovering and inheriting the value of traditional Buddhist heritage within modern cultural trends. It is expected that Korea's ancient temples, like Gangjin Baeknyeon temple, which possess abundant national heritage, will not merely conform to the “Hip Buddhism” trend but will instead develop and offer differentiated content based on their unique stories. In other words, the cultural content activation plans proposed in this study are significant in providing customized experiences, considering visitors with diverse interests and current cultural content trends, and in enhancing the socio-cultural value of Gangjin Baeknyeon temple.
