공예가 백태원의 초기 활동 연구 - 나전칠기 교습생에서 공예가로 성장하기까지

국문 초록

본 연구는 평범한 시골 소년이던 백태원이 한반도의 굴곡진 역사를 몸소 체험하며 한 명의 청년 공예가로 성장해나가는 과정을 살펴보고, 그 속에서 탄생한 작품들과 함께 자연스레 형성된 백태원만의 공예관을 규정해보고자 하였다. 백태원은 태천칠공예소와 조선총독부 중앙시험소에서의 학습을 통해 전통공예의 기법과 정신, 근대공예의 기술과 제도를 모두 습득하게 된다. 또한 과거의 법식을 벗어나 창조성과 작가정신을 추구하는 해방 전후 미술계의 경향을 간파하고 이를 흡수하였는데, 덕분에 동시대 한국 공예계에서는 찾아볼 수 없었던 디자인 감각과 조형성을 갖춘 작품들을 조선미술전람회, 대한민국미술전람회 그리고 본인의 첫 개인전에서 차례대로 선보일 수 있었다. 나전칠기가 품은 전통에 창조성을 담아 공예의 미래를 제시하려던 백태원의 관점은 이후 세대의 공예가들에게 지대한 영향력을 행사했고 지금도 유효하기에 그 의의가 뚜렷하다. 작품 실견을 토대로 추가적인 연구가 진척된다면 공예계에서의 위상에 비해 깊이 논의되지 못했던 백태원의 작품세계를 더욱 면밀히 통찰해 볼 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

영문 초록

This study examines the journey of Tae Woun Paik, an ordinary boy from a rural village, as he personally experienced the turbulent history of the Korean Peninsula and matured into a young craft artist. It aims to define Paik’s unique philosophy of craft, which naturally took shape alongside the works he produced throughout this transformative process. Through his training at the Taecheon Lacquerware Craft School and the Central Research Laboratory under the Japanese Government-General of Korea, Paik acquired both the techniques and spirit of traditional craft, as well as the technologies and systems of modern craft. Furthermore, he discerned and embraced the shifting trends in the post-liberation art world, which moved away from traditional formalism toward creativity and artistic individuality. This enabled him to present works—at the Joseon Art Exhibition, the National Art Exhibition of Korea, and his first solo show—that displayed a design sensibility and sculptural quality rarely seen in Korean craft at the time. Paik’s perspective, which sought to suggest the future of craft by blending tradition with creativity in mother-of-pearl lacquerware, had a profound impact on subsequent generations of craft artists and remains relevant today, underscoring its significance. If additional research is developed based on direct examination of his works, it is expected that a deeper understanding of Tae Woun Paik’s artistic world—long underexplored despite his standing in the craft community—can be achieved.
