국문 초록

본 연구는 코로나-19 팬데믹 이후 가속화된 생태 위기와 기후 변화의 맥락에서, 비엔날레가 어떻게 기존의 큐레이토리얼 방법론을 전환하고 있는지를 고찰한다. 전통적으로 비엔날레는 단일 큐레이터 중심의 제왕적 큐레이토리얼 모델을 바탕으로 특정 이론적 개념이나 주제를 전시 형식으로 설명해왔다. 이러한 방식은 지난 수십 년간 주류 큐레이팅의 틀을 형성해왔지만, 최근 들어 다학제적 연구팀과 지역 커뮤니티, 글로벌 네트워크 간의 협력적 실천이 점차 강조되고 있다. 특히 공동 큐레이션, 콜렉티브 중심의 의사결정, 비서구적 지식 체계와의 연계 등을 통해 기존 전시 제도의 경계를 넘어서는 새로운 협업 방식이 나타나고 있다. 본 논문은 이러한 변화의 대표적 사례로 2023년 제2회 헬싱키비엔날레의 ‘큐레이토리얼 인텔리전스(Curatorial Intelligences)’ 플랫폼을 분석한다. 이 비엔날레는 단일한 큐레토리얼 권위를 지양하고, 지역 풀뿌리 단체와 국제 연구기관이 연대하여 전시를 공동 기획하는 새로운 조직형 모델을 실험하였다. 이러한 실천은 비엔날레가 단순한 예술 전시를 넘어, 생태 위기에 대한 사회적 책임을 수행하고 공동체 기반의 지속가능한 실천으로 전환하는 데 있어 실질적인 모델이 될 수 있는지를 평가하는 데 핵심적이다. 본 연구는 큐레이토리얼 모델의 전환이 생태 위기 대응의 문화적 메커니즘으로서 어떠한 가능성과 한계를 가지는지를 다학제적 시각에서 분석하며, 동시대 미술제의 조직 구조가 사회적 전환과 생태 정의를 실현하는 플랫폼이 될 수 있는지를 모색한다.

영문 초록

This study explores how biennales have transformed their curatorial methodologies in response to the ecological crisis and climate change, especially in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Traditionally, biennales have adopted a monolithic, curator-centered model—often referred to as “pharaonic curatorship”—that relies on the authority of a single curator to articulate conceptual themes through exhibition formats. However, recent years have witnessed a notable shift toward collaborative curatorial practices involving interdisciplinary research teams, grassroots organizations, and global institutional networks. These developments reflect a broader transition in exhibition-making toward collective decision-making and the integration of non-Western knowledge systems. As a key case study, this paper examines the 2nd edition of the Helsinki Biennial (2023), which was organized under the interdisciplinary platform “Curatorial Intelligences.” This biennial rejected the singular voice of curatorial authority and instead emphasized localized collaborations between civic organizations and international research institutions. Such a model is evaluated as a potential alternative framework for addressing urgent global challenges through cultural practice. By analyzing this shift through a multidisciplinary lens, the paper interrogates whether new curatorial formations can meaningfully contribute to ecological resilience and social transformation. Ultimately, it proposes that biennales, when reimagined as collaborative and accountable infrastructures, may offer effective cultural responses to the climate emergency.
