국문 초록

‘실기(實記)’라는 제명이 붙은 작품들은 본래 역사적 인물의 생애와 관련 자료를 기록하고 제시하는 것을 주요 목적으로 하는 장르였다. 그러나 일제강점기에 구활자로 간행된 실기 작품은 대중적인 독서물로서의 성격을 가지면서, 전통적 실기와는 달리 서술자가 적극적으로 개입하거나 허구적 요소를 활용하는 등 장르적 변화가 두드러지게 나타난다. 이러한 작품들은 특정 역사 인물의 일대기를 중심으로 전개되며, 해당 인물이 겪었던 역사적 사건이나 갈등을 극적으로 묘사하거나 다양한 흥미로운 일화들을 적극 활용하여 독자에게 보다 생동감 있는 이야기를 전달한다. 이러한 서술 방식은 ‘실기’라는 제명에도 불구하고 객관적이고 사실적 기록에 집중했던 기존 장르의 특성에서 벗어나 서사화와 소설화의 경향이 강조된 것으로 볼 수 있다. 이러한 맥락에서 구활자본 실기 작품은 서술자가 주인공뿐만 아니라 주변 인물들의 내면과 상황도 다각적으로 제시하면서, 사실과 허구가 결합되어 전개된다. 그 결과 구활자본 실기 작품은 일제강점기의 독서 문화 속에서 널리 읽힌 작품으로 자리를 잡게 되었으며, 당시 출판사들 역시 이 작품들을 소설 장르로 표기하거나 광고하는 등 소설과 같은 범주로 인식하고 있었다. 따라서 본 연구에서도 구활자본 실기 작품을 전통적 실기의 범주에서 벗어나 역사적 인물을 대상으로 서술한 일대기적 소설로 파악하고자 한다.

영문 초록

Existing studies of Silgi have primarily focused on works that record direct experiences of historical events, such as wars, classifying them under the distinct category of 'Silgi literature.' However, these works did not originally bear the title Silgi. Traditionally, works explicitly titled Silgi aimed to record historical figures' lives and present related materials objectively. However, Silgi works published in the Guhwaljabon format during the Japanese colonial period aimed at broader readership and, unlike traditional Silgi, displayed notable genre transformations by incorporating fictional elements and active narratorial interventions. Centered around the biographical depiction of historical figures, these works dramatically highlighted significant historical events and conflicts experienced by the protagonists, often utilizing intriguing anecdotes to engage readers more vividly. This narrative approach marked a shift from the traditional focus on objective factuality, signaling an evident transition towards novelistic representation despite retaining the title Silgi. Moreover, narrators in the Guhwaljabon Silgi works frequently portrayed not only the main characters but also the internal lives and circumstances of surrounding figures, integrating fact and fiction extensively. Consequently, these works became widely popular among contemporary readers during the colonial period, with publishers often categorizing and marketing them explicitly as novels. Therefore, this study aims to reinterpret the genre status of the Guhwaljabon Silgi works, viewing them not merely as extensions of traditional Silgi but as biographical novels centered around historical figures, highlighting their distinctive narrative strategies and fictionalized storytelling.
