<설인귀전>에 나타난 보조인물의 주도성 연구

국문 초록

<설인귀전>은 실존인물을 주인공으로 한 중국소설이 인기를 얻어 널리 읽히면서 조선에도 들어와 형성되었다. 이러한 과정에서 원작을 그대로 번역하지 않고 그 내용을 축약하고 새로운 화소를 첨가하여 개작을 시도하였으므로 여러 이본이 생겼다. 중국소설과 조선본 <설인귀전>을 비교하면 주인공과 보조인물의 역할과 특성이 우리 상황에 맞도록 변화한 것을 알 수 있다. 영웅인물이 등장하는 고전소설에서는 대체로 비범한 능력의 소유자가 가문과 본인에게 닥친 시련을 극복하고 끝내 승리를 쟁취한다. <설인귀전>도 그러한데, 설인귀가 비참한 상황에 놓이거나 죽을 위기에 빠지는 등 여러 고난을 겪는 것으로 그려진다. 그런데 주인공으로서 어려움을 당했을 때 적극적인 자세로 이를 해결하려는 모습보다는 회피적인 성향을 드러내 영웅인물로 적합하지 않은 부분이 있다. 이때마다 오히려 보조인물이 주도적으로 나서 설인귀를 이끌어 시련을 극복하도록 하는 역할을 수행한다. <설인귀전>의 보조인물은 우선 주인공이 시련에 굴복하고 방황하지 않도록 인생의 목표를 명확하게 세울 때까지 그를 이끌어주는 안내자의 역할을 담당한다. 그리고 주인공이 황제를 구출할 능력을 기르도록 실전 경험을 쌓을 수 있는 기회를 제공한다. 그뿐만 아니라 여러 보조인물의 활약을 그리면서 주인공 외의 인물이 펼치는 흥미로운 군담을 더하기도 한다. <설인귀전>은 주도적 면모를 갖춘 보조인물을 다양하게 등장시켜 작품의 내용을 풍성하게 하고 서사를 다변화하였다. 주인공의 이야기만 단선적으로 늘어놓는 것에서 나아가 다른 장수들의 용력 대결이나 궁중의 권력 다툼과 같은 내용을 추가하여 작품의 흥미성을 고양한 것이다. 또한 수동적인 주인공과 진취적인 보조인물의 극명한 대비를 바탕으로 배역의 전형성을 탈피하여 독자의 관심을 불러일으킬 수 있었다고 생각된다. 게다가 중국소설을 그대로 번역하지 않고 조선의 현실에 맞게 등장인물의 성격을 바꾼 것에서 당시 고전소설 작가의 창작의식을 발견할 수도 있다. 독자층을 고려하여 주인공과 보조인물의 성격을 기존 작품과 다르게 한 것은 대중 독서물로서의 통속성을 충족하면서도 새로운 작품을 만들어내겠다는 작가의 적극적인 의지가 반영된 것이다.

영문 초록

SeolInkwijun is a novel that was widely read in China and later introduced to Joseon. During this process, various adaptations emerged as the content was condensed and new narrative elements were added. A comparison between the original Chinese version and the Joseon adaptation of SeolInkwijun reveals siginigicant differences, particularly in how the roles and characteristics of the protagonist and supporting characters were modified to align with the sociocultural context of Joseon. When faced with adversity, SeolInkwi does not clearly define his life goals or seek ways to achieve them. Instead, he adopts a highly passive and reserved attitude, making him ill-suited as a heroic figure. In such situations, it is the supporting characters who take the initiative, guiding the protagonist and playing a crucial role in overcoming challenges. The supporting characters in SeolInkwijun take an active role in guiding SeolInkwi, ensuring that he does not succumb to despair and wander aimlessly during times of hardship. They serve as proactive mentors, leading SeolInkwi until he clearly establishes his life goals. Additionally, they provide him with opportunities to gain practical experience, helping to enhance his abilities. Furthermore, by incorporating multidimensional supporting characters, the narrative expands through the addition of war stories and dramatic episodes, enriching the overall content of the work. By incorporating a diverse range of proactive supporting characters, SeolInkwijun enriches its narrative and introduces variations in storytelling, thereby enhancing the work’s overall appeal. Furthermore, the contrast between the passive protagonist and the enterprising supporting characters captures readers’ interest. Additionally, the adaptation of character traits to suit the target readership reflects the priorities of popular literature at the time, demonstrating the creative consciousness of classical novelists who sought both to satisfy conventional expectations and to craft a distinctive literary work.
