국문 초록

본 연구는 한국어 연결어미 ‘-건대’의 의미 기능을 증거성의 관점에서 분석한 것이다. 증거성(evidentiality)이란 화자가 전달하고자 하는 사건이나 상황에 대한 정보에 대한 출처(source of information)나 획득 경로를 명시하는 문법 범주로, 한국어의 증거성은 주로 ‘-겠-, -더-’와 같은 선어말 어미, ‘-네, -구나’와 종결어미와 관련지어 논의되어 왔다. 최근 일부 연결어미가 증거성의 실현과 관련된 기능을 가진다는 논의가 있었지만, ‘-건대’는 아직까지 주목을 받지 못해 왔다. 이에 본 연구는 연결어미 ‘-건대’가 증거성, 특히 내성 증거성의 의미 범주를 실현하는 문법 형식으로 기능함을 밝히고자 하였다. 이를 위해 대규모 말뭉치를 기반으로 ‘-건대’와 결합 가능한 서술어들의 유형과 의미적 특성을 분석하였으며, 해당 어미가 정보의 출처를 명시하는 방식과 관련된 통사·의미적 제약을 살펴보았다. 분석 결과 연결어미 ‘-건대’는 ‘보다’, ‘듣다’와 같은 직접 지각 동사뿐 아니라 ‘추측하다’, ‘예상하다’, ‘유추하다’ 등 화자 내면의 판단을 반영하는 서술어들과 결합하여, 직접 증거성과 내성 증거성을 함께 실현하는 양상을 보임을 확인하였다. 특히 연결어미 ‘-건대’와 결합하는 서술어가 지닌 어휘적 증거성과 관련하고 있을 뿐 아니라, 시제 선어말 어미와의 결합 제약 양상과 선행절의 주어가 1인칭이어야 한다는 제약을 토대로 해당 연결어미가 직접 증거성 중에서도 내성 증거성을 드러내는 문법 범주로서 기능함을 확인할 수 있었다. 아울러 ‘-건대’는 학술 문헌이나 판례문처럼 텍스트 생산자의 판단과 정보 출처를 명시하는 것이 요구되는 레지스터에서 특히 높은 빈도로 나타나며, 이는 해당 어미가 단순한 인과 표지 이상의 증거성 실현 기능을 수행하고 있음을 시사한다.

영문 초록

This study examines the grammatical and semantic properties of the Korean connective ending ‘-gundae’ from the perspective of evidentiality, a linguistic category that encodes the source and reliability of the speaker’s information. While the evidential functions of Korean grammatical markers have received increasing scholarly attention, little focus has been placed on connective endings. In particular, ‘-gundae’ , commonly regarded as a causal or explanatory conjunction, has rarely been examined for its evidential role. Through corpus-based analysis, this paper shows that ‘-gundae’ frequently co-occurs with perception verbs like “see” and “hear,” as well as cognitive predicates such as “assume,” “predict,” and “infer.” These patterns indicate that ‘-gundae’ does not merely link cause and effect but also encodes how the speaker has accessed or evaluated the information. It thus functions as a marker of both direct evidentiality, grounded in sensory perception, and inner evidentiality, based on the speaker’s internal reasoning or judgment. Syntactically, ‘-gundae’ shows significant constraints: it predominantly occurs with first-person subjects in the subordinate clause and strongly resists combination with past-tense morphemes like -ass/eoss-. These features point to the construction’s alignment with present-oriented, self-acquired knowledge and highlight its epistemic focus on the speaker’s perspective. Moreover, ‘-gundae’ is especially prevalent in registers such as academic writing and legal discourse, where explicit expression of the speaker’s stance and the information source is crucial. This distribution supports the argument that ‘-gundae’ serves not merely as a subordinating connector but as a grammatical evidential marker that contributes to managing speaker authority and evidential clarity. The study concludes that ‘-gundae’ holds a distinct grammatical position within the Korean evidential system, reflecting both the speaker’s epistemic commitment and the discourse contexts in which information is framed.
