In Trilogy, Jon Fosse reconstructs theatrical elements within the novel through symbolic transformation, imbuing the text with dramatic expressiveness. He does not mechanically transplant theatrical techniques but, rather, adjusts the symbolic system of prose in accordance with the characteristics of the novel medium. This allows the text to transcend purely narrative functions, directly engaging the reader’s senses and emotions, creating an immersive experience similar to theatrical performance. Fosse has the actions of his characters drive changes in the scene, enabling the reader to sense intense shifts in atmosphere within the flow of space, and through this perception of atmosphere, to understand the inner worlds of the characters. He employs fragmented, anti-logical dialogue to create “pauses”, elongating the rhythm of the conversation by placing each sentence in a separate paragraph, forming a physical void that brings about a sense of temporal stasis. By blurring the boundaries between reality and memory, Fosse replaces linear narrative with characters’ perceptual experiences, causing time to exhibit properties of stagnation and circularity. The characters seem trapped within their own experiences, unable to reach a resolution. Fosse’s theatrical treatment is, in essence, a reconstruction of the novel’s symbolic system, completing a transformation through intermedial narration. This allows him to break free from the traditional narrative framework of the novel, offering a reading experience that carries the immediate presence and emotional impact of theater.

영문 초록

约恩·福瑟在小说《三部曲》中,通过符号转换将戏剧元素重构于小说文本,使文字具备戏剧的表现力。他并非机械移植戏剧手法,而是基于小说媒介特性,对文字符号进行调整,使其超越纯粹的叙述功能,直接作用于读者的感官与情绪,营造如戏剧观演般的沉浸体验。他让人物的行动带动场景变化,使读者在空间的流动中感受气氛的强烈变化,在对气氛的感知中体会到人物的内心世界。他以破碎、反逻辑的对话制造“静场”,通过“一句话单独成段”的形式拉长对话节奏,形成物理上的空白,带来时间的停滞感。他模糊现实与记忆的边界,以人物的感知体验取代线性叙述,使时间呈现出凝滞与回旋的特性。人物仿佛困于自身经历之中,难以抵达终点。福瑟的戏剧化处理,实质是对小说符号系统的重塑,使其在跨媒介叙述中完成转换,从而突破传统小说的叙述框架,使阅读体验更具戏剧的现场感与情感冲击力。
