Confucius' concept of “uprightness”(直) underscores the critical role of moral judgment in governance, advocating its concrete application in social practice to achieve justice in communal life. Modern states, currently confronting the predicament of individual moral absence, find in this “uprightness” framework a foundational basis for ethical discernment. Through practical moral judgments that clarify individuals' rights and responsibilities ( 权分), it helps establish universal ethical norms within political communities. Therefore, integrating this “uprightness”-centered philosophy - internalizing it in moral cultivation while externalizing it in political principles - could enhance legal authority and public trust, thereby promoting social harmony. Incorporating this concept during the modernization of governance systems facilitates the construction of a hybrid governance model combining rule of law with moral governance. Such integration not only elevates governance capacity but also ensures more humanistic and ethically-guided policy implementation, ultimately contributing to the refinement and evolution of the socialist system with Chinese characteristics.
