국문 초록

1594년 윤두수는 장문포 해전을 통해 적보다 우세한 해양력을 기반으로 거제도를 점령하여 장차 작전의 거점으로 삼으려 했다. 이를 위해 그는 수군과 지상군과의 합동작전, 즉 강제진입작전을 계획, 실행하였다. 강제진입작전은 해군뿐만 아니라 지상군 역시 적보다 강해야 성공할 수 있는 작전이다. 하지만 해전 경과를 분석해본 결과 작전의 수단이 되는 지상군의 병력, 무장, 군수지원 등은 양적으로나 질적으로 충분하지 못했다. 결국 이러한 수단의 부족은 목적을 달성하게 할 방법의 실행을 불가능하게 하였다. 결국 지상군은 주어진 임무를 완수하지 못했고 그 결과 장문포 해전은 유의미한 성과 없이 허망하게 종료되었다. 전투 목적 달성을 위해서는 그에 필요한 수단을 갖추고 적합한 방법을 적용해야 한다. 작전 최고 지휘관이 임무와 역할을 깨닫지 못하고 전투를 했다는 것이 장문포 해전의 근본적인 실패 원인이었다. 우리가 장문포 해전을 해양전략이라는 군사적 시각에서 이해해야 하는 이유도 바로 여기에 있다. 과거의 실패에서 교훈을 찾지 않으면 역사는 반복되는 것이다. 특히 그것이 인명과 관계된 전사(戰史)라면 더더욱 다양한 관점에서 철저히 분석해야 한다. 교리 등 전술 전략 개념도 발전해간다는 측면에서 과거의 사례를 오늘의 관점으로 해석한 본 연구가 미래를 위한 교훈 도출에 기여하기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

In 1594, Yun Du-su of Joseon attempted to capture Geoje Island during the Battle of Jangmunpo, aiming to establish it as a strategic base for future operations based on superior maritime power. To achieve this, he planned and executed a joint operation between the navy and the army, specifically a Forcible Entry Operation (FEO). The success of such an operation depends not only on the strength of the navy but also on the army’s superiority over the enemy. However, an analysis of the battle reveals that the army’s manpower, armament, and logistical support—key components of the operation— were insufficient both in quantity and quality. Ultimately, the lack of adequate strategic methods (the resources and capabilities) made it impossible to carry out the operation effectively. The army failed to complete its assigned tasks, and as a result, the Battle of Jangmunpo ended in failure without significant achievement. To achieve the objectives of a battle, it is essential to have the necessary methods and apply the appropriate strategic ways. The fundamental failure of the Battle of Jangmunpo lies in the fact that the supreme commander did not fully understand the mission and role of the forces involved. This is why we must understand the Battle of Jangmunpo from the military perspective of maritime strategy. If we fail to learn from past mistakes, history will inevitably repeat itself. Particularly in the case of military history, which involves human lives, it is crucial to analyze it thoroughly from various viewpoints. This study, which interprets past events from today’s perspective, aims to contribute to drawing lessons for the future, particularly in terms of developing military doctrine and tactical strategies.
