국문 초록

이 논문은 신라의 동해안 해상활동과 그 운영 방식을 분석한 글이다. 신라가 동해안 항로를 활용한 과정과 진출 시점을 재구성하는 것에 목적을 두었다. 신라는 동해를 시작으로 남해와 황해까지 해상활동을 확장하였다. 특히 동해안은 그 방향으로의 교통로를 개척하는 것과 더불어 외부와의 교류, 군사 방어 측면에서의 전략적 의미 등 신라에 있어서 중요한 위치를 차지하였다. 본 연구에서는 기존 문헌과 고고학적 자료를 종합적으로 검토하여 신라의 동해안 진출 시점과 항로, 운영 방식을 추적하고자 하였다. 신라는 2세기 초부터 포항, 삼척, 강릉 등 연안 지역으로 진출하며 동해안을 활용하였으며, 고구려와 예 세력과 교류하였다. 4세기 중엽에는 강원도 지역의 동해안으로까지 영향력을 확대하였다. 다만 5세기에는 고구려의 남하로 인해 일시적으로 지배력을 상실하였으나, 6세기 이후 지증왕대에 이르러 본격적으로 동해안 해상활동이 재개되었다. 강릉을 비롯한 주요 항구와 연안 기항지는 이때 적극적으로 연계되며 활용되었을 것으로 여겨진다. 이렇듯 신라의 동해안은 국가적 발전 과정 속에서 지배방식의 변화를 반영하며 운영되었다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes the maritime activities of the Silla Kingdom along the East Coast of the Korean Peninsula, focusing on their operational methods and strategic significance. The primary objective is to reconstruct the timeline and processes by which Silla utilized maritime routes in this region. Initially, Silla expanded its maritime activities from the East Sea to the South Sea and the Yellow Sea. Among these, the East Coast was of particular strategic importance—not only for developing transportation routes but also for facilitating external exchanges and reinforcing military defense. Drawing on historical records and archaeological evidence, this study traces the chronology, routes, and administrative structures associated with Silla’s eastward maritime expansion. Beginning in the early 2nd century, Silla extended its influence to coastal areas such as Pohang, Samcheok, and Gangneung, and also engaged in exchanges with Goguryeo and the Ye tribes. By the mid-4th century, Silla had further expanded its presence along the East Coast in the Gangwon region. However, this influence temporarily receded during the 5th century due to Goguryeo’s southward expansion. Maritime activities were fully restored during the reign of King Jijeung in the 6th century, during which major ports and coastal stopover points—particularly Gangneung—were likely integrated into Silla’s maritime network. In this context, the East Coast came to be managed as a vital part of national development, reflecting broader shifts in governance and statecraft.
