환율변동이 투자에 미치는 효과

국문 초록

본 연구는 1990-2010년 기간 중 우리나라 제조업 기업의 패널자료를 사용하여 환율변동이 기업의 투자에 미치는 영향을 직접경로, 수출경로, 수입비경로 등 세 가지 경로로 나누어 실증적으로 분석한 것이다. 우리나라 제조업의 경우 환율변동이 투자에 미치는 효과는 직접경로, 수출경로, 수입경로 등 3가지 경로 중에서 직접경로와 수출경로는 양(+)의 유의한 추정치를 나타내 환율상승이 투자를 확대하는 요인으로 작용한 것으로 보인다. 수입경로는 대기업과 환리스크 헷징기업인 경우를 제외하고 환율상승의 투자감축효과를 통계적으로 확인하기 어려운 것으로 나타났다. 환율변동이 투자에 미치는 효과는 대기업, 순수출기업, 수출기업, 환리스크 헷징 기업 등이 중소기업, 순수입기업, 내수기업, 환리스크 비 헷징 기업 등에 비해 더욱더 뚜렷하게 나타나고 있으며 따라서 이들 기업군의 경우 환율상승이 투자확대요인으로 상대적으로 더 유리하게 작용하는 것으로 풀이할 수 있다. 한편 마크업률이 낮을수록 환율변동의 투자변동효과는 더욱더 증폭되는 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

This paper investigates the effects of exchange rate fluctuations on the investment of Korean manufacturing firms using firm-level panel data during the period between 1990 and 2010. The paper distinguishes exchange rate impacts on investment into three channels: the effect through domestic prices(direct channel), the effect through exports(export channel) and the effect through input imports(import channel). The results show that exchange rate depreciation tends to increase investment through direct channel and export channel for most of the samples, but the import channel was statistically significant only for the large firms and exchange risk-hedging firms. This result is contrasting to the existing studies which show the exchange rate depreciation tends to reduce investment. Our study also finds that mark-up rate has a magnifying impacts of exchange rate fluctuations on firm-level investment: the lower the mark-up arte, the higher its impacts on investment. The paper introduces dynamic investment model and estimates the coefficients of three channels applying the system-GMM method of Arellano and Bover(1995)와 Blundell and Bond(1998).
