한국의 설화와 동화에 제시된 아동희생의 양상과 문학교육적 함의

국문 초록

한국의 현대 동화에서 아동의 희생을 주제로 한 작품을 정전으로 평가하는 경향이 있다. 필자는 이런 작품을 정전으로 평가하는 문화적 토양에 대해 의문을 가졌다. 세계의 어느 나라나 신화나 전설, 민담은 동화의 뿌리가 되기 때문에 아동의 희생을 모티프로 하는 동화도 그 근원은 설화에서 찾을 수 있을 것이라고 생각하여 필자는 인신공희 설화의 유형과 특징을 고찰한 다음, 그 가운데에서도 어린아이를 희생물로 삼는 효행설화의 양상과 의미를 고찰하였다. 선행 연구들을 바탕으로 조사 연구한 결과 한국에는 효행설화가 다른 나라에 비해 유난히 많고, 더 나아가 인신희생을 담보한 효행설화는 한국에만 있는 것 같다는 점을 확인하였다. 그러므로 아동희생 모티프가 숨어있는 《만년 사쓰》, 《몽실 언니》, 《강아지똥》, 《오세암》등이 한국 아동문학의 정전으로 손꼽히는 이유도 이와 연관이 있으리라고 짐작할 수 있다. 한국 문화권에서 성장한 작가나 연구자들 의 무의식에 효행설화의 모티프가 잠재해있었기 때문에 이런 작품이 창작되고 또 정전으로 거론되었다는 추론이 가능한 것이다. 그러나 어린이들이 어른을 위해 희생하는 모티프를 지닌 동화를 아동문학의 정전으로 평가하는 것은 옳지 않다. 어린이는 희생을 해야 하는 존재가 아니고, 마음껏 생명력을 구가해야하는 존재이기 때문이다. 동화작가나 연구자는 창작과 연구 과정에서 이런 점을 깊이 인식해야 하고, 문학교육 연구자도 정전을 선정하거나 교과서 게재 작품을 고를 때에도 이 문제를 고려해야 한다.

영문 초록

Among Korean modern children literatures, some literatures take theme from children’s sacrifice, and they are highly appreciated in the literary world. What would be the reason for these literatures are highly accepted? This thesis focused to find a reason from the cultural background. Numerous children literatures are rooted in folk tales in many countries. Thus, the children literatures that take motive from children’s sacrifice can also be rooted from the folk tales of Korea. This thesis, therefore, studied about the meaning and the aspects of filial stories. Upon analysis on the precedent studies, it turned out that filial stories are much more common in Korean literature. Also, the filial tales that require a human sacrifice is only found in Korean literatures. Therefore, we can infer that the highly respected children literatures, such as 《(The) birthday suit》, 《Mong-sil sister》, 《Kangajiddong(Doggy Poo)》, 《Oseam》, can be influenced by filial tales of Korea. Also, it is probable that these filial tales are imprined in the minds of children book authors and researchers. However, it is not proper to highly respect these literatures, because children do not exist for sacrifice, but they rather exist to live their own life. Child book authors and researchers should always keep this in mind while writing and researching. The literature education scholars also should consider this point while selecting the literary work for the text book.
