십경(十境)의 후 삼경(三境)에 관한 고찰

국문 초록

수행자는 선정수행시 나타나는 여러 가지 경계를 지혜롭게 대처하고 처리해야한다. 이러한 부분을 간과하거나 소홀히 한다면 여러 가지 어려움에 봉착하게 된다. 실제로 여러 수행서에서 강조를 하고 있지만 많이 부각되지 못해왔다. 지금도 많은 수행자들이 여러 곳에서 정진을 하고 있다. 그런데 그 정진을 통해 증득하게 되는 목표는 정확히 설정되어 있다. 그러나 그 도정에서 만나는 갖가지 경계와 처방은 잘 모르고 있다. 그래서 깨닫지 못했는데 깨달았다고 하고, 또한 독단적으로 공(空)에 집착을 하며, 소승의 보살심(菩薩心)에 떨어지게 된다. 천태지의(天台智顗)는 이러한 오류를 명확히 파악하시고 그 처방을 상세히 정리하여 후학들에게 남겨주었다. 그것이 열 가지 수행경계인 십경(十境)이다. 그러나 이러한 10경 가운데 증상만경(增上慢境)과 이승경(二乘境)과 보살경(菩薩境)은 『마하지관(摩訶止觀)』에서 생략되었다. 그렇지만 지의는 비록 생략하였지만, 후 3경의 중요성을 강조하고 있다. 먼저 증상만경은 상만경이나 만경(慢境)으로도 불린다. 그리고 얻지 못한 것을 얻었다고 하거나 증득하지 못한 것을 증득했다고 잘못 생각하는 것이다. 그래서 이러한 부분을 명확히 파악하고 시정해야 한다. 다음, 이승의 독단적 공견(空見)은 지관수행을 방해하며 일보도 전진시키지 않는다. 여기에서 이승경으로 십승관법(十乘觀法)을 적용해서 사견과 편벽된 집착을 떠나야 함을 강조하고 있다. 그리고 보살경은 보살이 떨어지기 쉬운 경계이다. 그래서 보살경은 소승보살심(小乘菩薩心)이다. 지금 지의는 이승경을 벗어나도 특히 이 소승보살의 독선적인 편벽된 집착을 제거치 않으면 원돈지관(圓頓止觀)의 완성을 바랄 수 없으므로 이 보살경을 지관의 대상 경계로 제정하고 있다. 따라서 이러한 3경은 『마하지관』에서 생략되었다고 해서 소홀히 할 수 없다고 생각된다. 왜냐하면 그 중요성이 내용 가운데에 제시되어 있기 때문이다.

영문 초록

Ascetics should be able to deal with numerous encounters with wisdom in their course of austerities. If this is overlooked or neglected, ascetic exercises come to hit upon a number of difficulties. This, in fact, is a point emphasized by a lot of ascetic bibles but not paid enough attention. Currently lots of ascetics are practicing austerities in places with their ultimate goal clearly established. However, most of them are not well aware of how to deal with what kind of encounters on their way. This leads to the misconception of enlightenment, dogmatic obsession with emptiness and not reaching Bodhisattva of Hinayana. Buddhist priest Cheontaejii fully understood these mistakes and came up with solutions, leaving them for his followers. This is the Ten States, i.e. the ten states of practicing austerities. Of the ten states, however, the book of Mahajigwan does not mention the last three states: state of misconceived awakening; state of two vehicles; Bodhisattva’s state of mind. Though Cheontaejii did not mention them, their importance cannot be neglected. First, the state of misconceived awakening is the case when an ascetic thinks that he or she achieved or completed what actually is not achieved or completed. This should be clearly acknowledged and corrected. Second, the two-vehicular and dogmatic view of emptiness hinders asceticism, completely blocking its progress. This is the time when the ten-state mediation method should be applied to get rid of heretical and partial obsessions. Lastly, Bodhisattva’s state of mind is the state when Bodhisattva is likely to fall. In this context, Bodhisattva’s state of mind is the mind of Hinayana Bodhisattva. Buddhist priest Cheontaejii counts Bodhisattva’s state of mind as a state of Cheontae Buddhism as the completion of Mahajigwan is not possible without getting rid of the dogmatic and partial obsession of Hinayana Bodhisattva. The three states, though not mentioned in Mahajigwan, are not something to be neglected because the states themselves show how important they are.
