국문 초록

불교는 자리이타를 표방하는 종교다. 원효는 붓다의 정신을 중생에게 환원한 一心의 실천가이다. 그는 독특한 교화법으로 문맹인 서민들에게 ‘佛’을 가르친다. 眞如의 一心위에 생멸의 二門을 열어 眞俗이 평등한 사상을 펼쳤다. 無碍歌로 마음의 번뇌를 소멸시키고 진속의 차별을 넘어 평등하게 민중 불교를 전개한다. 평등무차별의 세계는 진여일심의 경지로 淨土와 穢土가 둘이 아니다. 원효는 현세에서 정토를 구현한 것이다. 당시의 신라는 연이은 전쟁으로 백성들의 고통이 엄청났음에도 불교는 귀족들의 소유물이었다. 원광과 자장은 진골출신으로 귀족불교의 대표적인 고승이었다. 그들은 국가의식의 고취와 왕권의 강화에 치중하였으므로, 일반인은 접근하기 어려웠다. 현생이나 내생이 계속 고통인 하층민의 삶에 불교는 도움이 되질 못했다. 이에 원효와 의상, 혜공, 혜숙, 대안 등은 하층민의 고통어린 삶에 눈을 돌리게 된다. 의상은 미타신앙과 관음신앙을 전개하여 민중 불교를 실행했다. 혜공과 혜숙도 시골촌민에게 전한 대중 불교를 실행하고 있었음을 알 수 있다. 대안은 ‘크게 편안하라(大安)’고 외치며 중생들의 평안을 기원하였다. 거사신분으로 스스로를 낮춘 원효는 정토신앙을 방편으로 민중신앙 운동에 앞장선다. 무애박을 동원한 ‘나무불’의 간단한 염불은 하층민들이 쉽게 따라했다. ‘나무불’은 그들에게 극락에 도달하게 하는 희망의 뗏목이었다. 신분과 승속에 구별없이 교화하여 『三國遺事』의 기록에 의하면 촌부들도 염불을 하게 되었다. 귀족과 양반들만의 염불이 서민층까지 보급된 것은 신라불교계에 원효의 교화행이 크게 영향을 끼쳤다고 보인다. 스스로의 상을 무너뜨리고 자리이타한 원효의 교화는 ‘뜻의 설법’으로 요익중생한다.

영문 초록

Buddhism is the religion that stands for improving oneself for the purpose of benefiting others(自利利他). Wonhyo is the monk of deeds who restored a religious teaching of Buddha to the sentient beings. He enlightened illiterate people about Buddhism with a unique approach. He opened the two gates of mind, creation and destruction, in the whole mind of the bhūtatathatā(眞如一心) and advocated the thought of equality in the truth and convention. He caused to cease the kleśa(煩惱) with unhindered song of the freedom from all obstacles and spread Buddhism for the people in general beyond the discrimination of the truth and convention. The realm of equality and identity means a state of the whole mind of the bhūtatathatā(眞如一心) which Pure-land and impure land are the same. Wonhyo tried to embody Pure-land in the present world. People of Shilla during the period of Wonhyo was mentally exhausted with war but the teaching of Buddhism was only for the noble. Won Gwang and Jajang, from the class, Gingol, are representatives on behalf of the noble Buddhism . Its emphasis is on boosting nationalism and strengthening the power of the King, so it is not accessible to the people in general and didn t help relieve agony in the present life and the life after death of the lower class at all. As a result, Monks such as Wonhyo, Uisang, Hyegong, Hyesuk, Daean etc attempted to face the reality of the lower class whose life was full of torment. Uisang practiced Buddhism for the public with Amitābha faith(彌陀信仰) and Avalokiteśvara faith(觀音信仰). Hyegong and Hyesuk also implemented it to the people in the countryside. Daean prayed for carefreeness of the mankind uttering loudly in peace . Wonhyo who lowered himself as a Buddhist devotee(居士) led the movement of religious belief for the people in general with Pure-land faith. The simple prayer of I devote myself entirely to the Buddha(南無佛) with unhindered gourd was so easy to chant to the people. I devote myself entirely to the Buddha(南無佛) is the raft of hope reaching for the Paradise to them. According to Samguk Yusa, Wonhyo educated people with the teaching of Buddha beyond the class, Monks and the laity(僧俗) and his approach made people in general chant the Buddhist invocation which was monopolized by the noble class and the class, Yangban. The practice of Wonhyo’s Buddhism which caused the spread of the Buddhist prayer to the public was considered to be a great influence on Shilla Buddhism. The teaching of Wonhyo who broke all the differentiating characteristics of things and improved oneself for the purpose of benefiting others was a Buddhist sermon of meaning to enrich the sentient beings.
