韓龍雲 시집 『님의 沈默』의 창작원리와 그 의미

국문 초록

이 글은 한용운의 시집 『님의 沈默』을 지배하고 주도하는 특별한 창작원리가 있다는 전제 아래 그것을 네 가지 측면에서 살펴본 글이다. 지금까지 한용운의 시집 『님의 沈默』에 대한 연구는 그 양적 성과에도 불구하고 본령에 다다르지 못하는 아쉬움을 남기고 있다. 그 이유는 여러 가지일 터이나 그 시집에 내재된 창작원리를 온전히 파악하지 못한 것이 상당히 큰 이유라고 생각한다. 한용운의 시집 『님의 沈默』에 내재된 네 가지의 창작원리는 다음과 같다 : 衆生濟度로서의 시쓰기, 化作으로서의 시쓰기, 날줄과 씨줄의 교직에 의한 시쓰기, 中道의 수사학에 의한 시쓰기. 이와 같은 네 가지의 창작원리가 구현된 까닭은 그의 이 시집이 예술작품 그 자체로서 존재한다기보다 佛道와 佛心이 수승한 한 불교 승려의 菩薩行 및 願力의 산물로 존재하기 때문이다. 그러니깐 한용운은 시인으로서 불교를 차용한 것이 아니라 불교 승려로서 시라는 세속 장르를 불교적 개념의 ‘방편’으로 삼은 것이다. 한용운의 시집 『님의 沈默』은 위와 같은 특수성으로 인하여 근대시독법으로 시읽기를 시도한 많은 연구자들과 독자들에게 당혹스러움을 안겨주었다. 이 시는 외형상 근대시 영역에 속하는 것 같지만 실은 어느 세속적인 시의 영역에도 속하지 않는 이른바 ‘진리 발견과 진리 구현의 담론’이었던 것이다. 진리는 시간과 공간을 초월한다. 따라서 이 시가 추구하는 것은 시대적 요구에 부응하는 것을 넘어 어느 시대에도 유효한 진리를 가리키고 체현하는 것이다. 한용운의 시집 『님의 沈默』이 지닌 이와 같은 창작원리와 특성은 우리로 하여금 시와 진리, 삶과 진리, 시대와 진리가 어떻게 일체가 될 수 있을까를 고민하게 만들면서 그 해결가능성의 단서를 제공해준다. 지금까지 우리의 삶은 너무나 엄청난 ‘是非分別’에 입각해 이루어졌다. 고도의 정신세계를 추구한다는 시인들의 시작행위조차 그와 같은 데서 크게 벗어나지 못하였다. 한용운의 시집 『님의 沈默』은 이런 시작행위와 예술행위를 근본적으로 되돌아보게 만든다. 그리고 우주적 진리 속에서 시와 삶이 전개되는 것이 어떤 것인지를 숙고하게 만든다.

영문 초록

Under the premise that there is a unique set of principles of writing poetry that prevails over Han Yong-Un’s Silence of the Lover, this paper examines the four aspects of the principles. Despite the sheer volume of study that has been conducted of Han’s Silence of the Lover, its fundamental characteristics have not yet been properly understood. I suggest that at the core of the problem lies the lack of proper understanding of Han’s principles of writing poetry. Han’s four principles of writing poetry that constitute Silence of the Lover are as follows: poetry writing as a way of saving people and lives, poetry writing as a form of infinite self-transformation, poetry writing through weaving of horizontal and vertical lines, and poetry writing by way of the rhetoric of duality. These four principles prevail in Silence of the Lover because the collection of poems exists less as a work of art than a product of the poet as a Buddhist monk. In other words, Han was not a poet appropriating Buddhism; rather, he was a Buddhist monk employing the secular genre of poetry as an instrument. Due to such peculiarity, Silence of the Lover is bound to puzzle the numerous researchers and readers who attempt to read the poems as they would read modern poetry. While Han’s poems may appear to fall within the boundary of modern poetry, in fact, they are discourses on the search of truth, and the realization of the truth, which lie outside the limits of secular poetry. Truth transcends time and space. In other words, Han’s poems seek to not only gratify the needs ot the times, but embody the truth that is valid beyond time. The characteristics and principles inherent in Han Yong-Un’s Silence of the Lover make us wonder how poetry, life, times, and truth can be unified, and at the same time, they give us a clue for answering the question. Thus far, our lives have been preoccupied with creating divisions. Even poets, who are considered men of lofty intellect, could rarely overcome the limitation. Han’s Silence of the Lover impels us to rethink the fundamental nature of writing poetry and artistic endeavor. Furthermore, it urges us to reflect on the meaning of life and poetry as they unfold in the cosmic truth.
