謫降 모티프를 통해 본 〈關東別曲〉의 주제

국문 초록

강원도관찰사로 파견된 작가 정철에게 관동지역은 교화해야 할 지방이었다. 그런데 그 경험을 바탕으로 창작되었다고 볼 수 있는 〈관동별곡〉에는 관동지역이 자연 세계는 맑고 아름다우며 인간사회는 풍속이 순하고 갈등이 없어 아름답고 조화를 이루는 세계로 그려져 있다. 무엇 때문인가? 문화 맥락에서 작품을 읽어 보면 이 의문을 해소할 길이 있으리라 판단하고, 특히 이 작품이 안축의 〈관동별곡〉이나 백광홍의 〈관서별곡〉과 정도는 다르지만 적강 모티프를 일정하게 수용하고 있다는 점에 주목하였다. 적강 모티브는 적선으로 형상화된 주인공이 본디 변방지역을 교화하는 관료로서의 자질과 능력을 갖춘 인물임을 드러내놓고 말하지 않아도 드러내는 동시에 임무 수행의 결과를 간명하게 드러내는 데 매우 효과적인 장치로 활용되었음을 확인하였다. 그리하여 이 작품이 왕명을 받아 변방지역의 하나인 관동지역을 순수하는 관료로서 작가 정철이 자기 임무를 성공적으로 완수하였음을 드러낸 작품이라는 해석을 이끌어냈다. 이러한 해석은 관동 지역을 교화하고자 하는 의지의 표현에 주목하여 작가의 정치의식을 강조하거나 신선과 관련한 어휘들에 주목하여 신선과 같이 자유로운 존재가 되고자 하는 의식을 강조하거나 아니면 두 가지 의식을 한 인간의 내면의 모순 충동으로 해석하는 것과는 사뭇 다르다. 작품에서 서로 다르게 주목되었던 얼핏 상충되는 듯 보이는 요소들이 실상은 하나의 주제를 드러내는 데 긴밀한 연관성을 갖고 있음을 밝힘으로써 〈관동별곡〉의 주제 논의를 통합적으로 수렴할 수 있는 길을 마련해 보고자 한 셈이기도 하다.

영문 초록

The aim of this essay is to interpret clearly the theme of Gwandong-byeolgok written by Jeong Cheol, a famous writer of Korean classical poems. By now some opinions on it have been presented by some critics; ones analyzed the writer’s political senses, an others read his desire to be free man from all the affairs of human society, and the others insisted that the two conflicting mental activity revealed his inner conflict as one of human beings. However, they had not concerned the fact that the work was based on the motif that a Taoist hermit with super-natural powers descended to this world for his redemption and return to the Heaven, the motif was used as a literary device of convention by bureaucrat-writers (including Confucians) who were exiled or relegated from the political capital to side areas of the country, outer of the boundary gates. Using it, the writer presented that he, as a deputy of the King, domesticated the Gangwon Province successfully. So all the nature and societies in the world of the work were represented purely, lightly, and beautifully. So the device could be the very effective device to signify that he was making a royal tour, and that completed its goal successfully. According to this interpretation, that the writer described himself as a figure of Taoist hermit who exiled from the Heaven means not revealing his inner desire to be free man from human societies, but being the very man to make a royal tour through the province and to domesticate the nature and societies of the province.
