This study traces changes in the interpretation of Daniel 11 within the Seventh-day Adventist Church by examining three key sources: Daniel and the Revelation by Uriah Smith (1897), the Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary (1955, rev. 1976), and the Andrews Study Bible (2010, rev. 2019). Smith’s work places Imperial Rome from verse 14 to 30, treats the papacy briefly in verses 31-35, and interprets the king of the South as atheism from verse 36. Verses 40-45 are applied to Turkey, reflecting the geopolitical context of his time. The Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary largely follows Smith but presents alternative views and avoids specifics on unfulfilled events. The Andrews Study Bible moves Rome’s appearance to verse 20, shortens Imperial Rome’s role, and focuses on the Church of Rome from verse 23 onward. These changes show that Adventist interpretation of Daniel 11 has shifted over time, shaped by new historical contexts, textual insights, and theological reflection. Rather than rigidly preserving tradition, the Church demonstrates openness to further light and a continued commitment to examine prophecy.

본 연구는 재림교회 내에서 다니엘 11장 해석이 어떻게 변화해 왔는지를 세 가지 핵심 자료를 분석함으로써 추적한다. 분석 대상은 우라이어 스미스(Uriah Smith)의 『다니엘과 요한계시록』(1897), 『재림교회 성경 주석』(1955, 개정 1976), 『앤드류스 스터디 바이블』(2010, 개정 2019)이다. 스미스의 저작은 14절부터 30절까지를 제국 로마 (Imperial Rome)에 적용하고, 31-35절은 로마 교황권을, 그리고 36절부터 39절까지의 남방 왕은 무신론으로 해석한다. 40-45절은 당대의 지정학적 상황을 반영하여 북방왕을 터키에 적용한다. 『재림교회 성경 주석』은 전반적으로 스미스를 따르지만, 대안적 견해를 제시하고 있으며, 미성취된 사건에 대해서는 구체적인 해석을 피한다. 『앤드류스 스터디 바이블』은 제국 로마의 등장 시점을 20절로 보고, 23절부터는 로마 교회의 종교적, 정치적 활동으로 해석한다. 이러한 변화는 재림교회의 다니엘 11장 해석이 시대적 역사 상황, 본문에 대한 새로운 통찰, 신학적 성찰에 따라 변화해 왔음을 보여준다. 이는 성경 예언에 대한 재림교회의 태도가 전통적 해석을 고수하기보다, 더 밝은 빛을 찾아 끊임없이 탐구하려는 데 있음을 보여준다.
