국문 초록

본 연구는 1980–90년대 뉴욕을 배경으로 활동한 예술가 집단인 서로문화연구회의 시각예술 실천과 전시기획을 중심으로, 한국계 미국인의 디아스포라 정체성과 문화적 자기표현의 형성 과정을 고찰한다. 서로문화연구회는 인종적 긴장과 제도적 배제가 심화된 사회정치적 맥락 속에서 등장하여, 공동체 기반의 전시를 통해 예술을 사회변화의 언어로 전환시켰다. 전시와 더불어 아카이브 실천에 있어서도 이들은 기록을 단순히 보존하는 데 그치지 않고, 기억을 재구성하고 공동체 서사를 회복하는 ‘살아 있는 장’으로 재개념화하였다. 디아스포라 정체성의 다층성과 유동성은 이들의 실험적 전시 전략과 집단 저작 방식 속에서 구체화되며, 탈식민적이고 참여 기반의 대안적 큐레이션 담론과 깊이 교차된다. 본 논문은 시각자료 분석, 구술사, 문헌 고찰으로 서로문화연구회의 실천이 상호문화적 연대, 인종 간 갈등, 이주 경험 등 다양한 주제를 어떻게 담아냈는지를 분석하고, 이들의 전시가 미술 제도 바깥에서 수행한 사회적 역할을 조명한다. 더불어, 타 아시아계 미국인 예술가 네트워크와의 연계 및 공동 실천 양상도 함께 살펴봄으로써, 이 단체의 활동이 동시대 큐레이션 실천에 유의미한 방법론적 유산을 제공함을 주장한다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the curatorial and artistic practices of the SEORO Korean Cultural Network, a collective of Korean and Korean American artists active in 1980s–1990s New York, to explore how they shaped Korean American identity through visual strategies and community-based exhibitions. Formed in response to racial tensions, urban marginalization, and institutional exclusion, SEORO's work challenged dominant narratives by reclaiming authorship and constructing transnational spaces of resistance.Through exhibitions, archives, and collaborative programming, the collective activated curatorial practice as a political and ethical form of care—foregrounding memory, diaspora, and collective authorship. Their curatorial methodology, rooted in relational practice and anti-essentialist critique, prefigures contemporary decolonial and participatory frameworks. Drawing from archival research, oral histories, and visual analysis, this paper situates SEORO within broader Asian American cultural networks, arguing that their practice offers a vital model for curating across borders. Ultimately, SEORO’s legacy demonstrates how artistic practice, when grounded in diasporic experience and grassroots collaboration, can become a transformative force of world-making and remembrance.
