본 연구는 아카이브의 집정관이자 정신분석학의 아버지라는 상징성을 지닌 지그문트 프로이트 박물관에 개입한 두 여성 예술가 소피 칼(Sophie Calle)과 수잔 힐러(Susan Hiller)의 전시에 주목한다. 프로이트 박물관은 단순히 프로이트의 유물과 정신분석학의 유산을 보존하는 장소를 넘어 자크 데리다(Jacques Derrida)가 정의한 ‘아카이브 열병’이 작동하는 장소이다. 정신분석학을 인간 정신에 관한 학문이자 아카이브의 학문이라고 보았던 데리다의 아카이브 열병 논의를 경유해 칼과 힐러의 예술적 개입이 생성하는 아카이브를 둘러싼 기억과 망각, 권력과 규범, 기억의 원형을 향한 강박적 욕망의 의미를 고찰한다. 재조합된 이미지, 발견된 사물, 파편화된 유물을 사용하면서도 허구나 오류의 요소를 포함하는 이들의 개입은 첫째, 프로이트 박물관의 조직적 논리와 아카이브의 계층적 배열을 방해한다. 즉 권위있는 거장의 기관 아르케(arkhe)를 의도적으로 방해함으로써 집정관으로서 프로이트의 장악력을 사실상 실패하도록 한다. 둘째, 이들 작품의 서사가 만드는 모호한 개방성과 허구성은 아카이브 열병 그 자체를 지시하면서도 오히려 프로이트의 집 중심에서 그의 부재를 강조한다. 셋째, 칼과 힐러 작품의 개입은 남근중심주의적 구조와 가부장적 세계관의 프로이트 정신분석학을 비판하면서 새로운 서사를 제시한다.

영문 초록

This study focuses on the exhibitions of two female artists, Sophie Calle and Susan Hiller, who intervened in the Freud Museum, a symbolic space that embodies Sigmund Freud as both the patriarch of psychoanalysis and the archon of the archive. The Freud Museum functions not merely as a repository for Freud’s personal artifacts and the legacy of psychoanalysis, but also as a site where Jacques Derrida’s notion of “archive fever” is actively at work. By engaging with Derrida’s theory—where psychoanalysis is understood as both a science of the mind and of the archive—this paper explores how the artistic interventions of Calle and Hiller reveal the tensions of memory and forgetting, power and normativity, and the compulsive desire to return to archival origins. Through the use of recombined images, found objects, and fragmented relics—often embedded with elements of fiction and error—their interventions, first, disrupt the organizational logic and hierarchical structure of the Freud Museum’s archive. By intentionally interfering with the arkhe, the foundational authority of the institution, they undermine Freud’s symbolic control as the archival archon. Second, the ambiguous and fictive narratives generated by their works point to archive fever itself, while simultaneously emphasizing Freud’s absence at the center of his own house. Third, their intervention offers a critical counter-narrative to the phallocentric structure and patriarchal worldview of Freudian psychoanalysis.
