국문 초록

본 연구는 프랑스 사회박물관의 역사적 기원, 제도화 과정, 정체성의 전개를 분석함으로써, 박물관이 어떻게 사회적 실천의 장으로 전환되었는지를 고찰한다. 프랑스 사회박물관은 민속학과 민족지학의 학문적 전통, 국립대중예술전통박물관의 실험적 시도, 신박물관학의 영향, 에코뮤지엄 운동, 그리고 국가 차원의 박물관 부흥정책이 중첩되며 형성된 복합적 산물이다. 사회박물관은 1991년 뮐루즈-웅거샤임 회의를 계기로 ‘사회박물관’이라는 명칭이 공식화되며, 공동체의 기억과 사회적 쟁점을 전시 주제로 삼는 새로운 박물관 모델로 제도화되었다. 그러나 제도화 이후 사회박물관은 정체성의 모호성, 참여 구조의 경직성, 운영상의 제약 등 다양한 구조적 한계에 직면하였다. 본 논문은 사회박물관이 과거를 해석하고 현재를 성찰하며, 공동체의 미래를 모색하는 열린 담론 공간으로 기능하기 위한 조건들을 분석한다. 이를 통해 박물관의 공공적 역할에 대한 인식을 확장하고, 박물관이 사회적 통합과 비판적 공론 형성의 장으로 작동할 수 있는 가능성을 제시하고자 한다.

영문 초록

This study examines how museums have evolved into spaces of social practice by analyzing the historical origins, institutionalization process, and identity development of the French Museum of Society (Musée de société). The French Museum of Society emerged as a complex construct shaped by overlapping influences: folklore and ethnography, experimental initiatives at the National Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions (Musée National des Arts et Traditions Populaires), the eco-museum movement, theoretical contributions of new museology and national museum revitalization policies. The official adoption of the term “musée de société” at the Mulhouse-Ungersheim Conference in 1991 marked its institutionalization as a new museum model that foregrounds community memory and contemporary social issues as central exhibition themes. However, since this institutionalization, French Museums of Society have encountered several structural challenges, including conceptual ambiguity, rigid participatory frameworks, and operational constraints. This paper critically explores the conditions under which Museum of Society can function as open discursive spaces - interpreting the past, critically engaging with the present, and envisioning shared futures. In doing so, it offers an expanded perspective on the public role of museums.
