전문계 고등학교 여학생 아르바이트의 경험과 의미

국문 초록

본 연구는 아르바이트 경험을 가진 전문계 고등학교 여학생들을 둘러싼 환경, 이들의 아르바이트 경험, 그리고 그 경험의 의미를 탐색하고자 수행되었다. 이에 연구자는 서울지역에 위치한 달빛 전문계 여자고등학교 학생 8명의 집단면담을 통해 자료를 수집하였다. 분석결과 아르바이트의 시작과 지속은 청소년들의 가정, 학교와 밀접하게 연관이 있었다. 풍족하지 못한 가정형편과 꿈과 미래를 찾을 수 없는 학교가 청소년들이 아르바이트에 참여하는 이유가 될 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 연구 참여자들이 경험한 아르바이트는 두 가지의 상반된 얼굴을 하고 있었다. 아르바이트 장소는 부모와 교사의 감독에서 벗어난 그들만의 신나고 즐거운 놀이터인 반면, 장시간의 강도 높은 일을 해야 하는 힘들고 고된 일터이기도 하였다. 또한 아르바이트는 학업의 중요성을 깨닫고 자신감을 얻게 되는 값진 경험이었으나, 충실한 학교생활을 어렵게 하고 충동적인 소비를 부추기는 결과를 초래한 후회되는 경험이기도 하였다. 연구자들은 이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 청소년 아르바이트와 관련한 시사점을 제안하였다. This study explores the nature and implications of teenage participation in the part-time job market in South Korea. Specifically, it explores the family background and school environment of students who hold part-time jobs; what they experience; and how they view their working experience in a country where-due to the social and economic pressure to attend a prestigious university-a majority of students devote the bulk of their time to academics and thus do not hold jobs. The data was collected via in-depth group interviews with eight vocational high school students who have, or have had, part-time work experience. The study shows how work experience impacts a teenager's school life and how the teenagers view their work experience. Analysis of the study's findings indicates that the likelihood of a teenager taking and holding a part-time job is associated with their family background and school engagement. Upon entering the workforce, some teens felt happier at their work place than at school and others realized that having a job entailed hard work and responsibility, and furthermore that being a worker is more challenging than simply being a student. Most of the participants failed to balance successfully their work and their studies, as the energy required to be a successful student was typically exhausted at their workplace. These findings imply that part-time employment has both positive and negative effects on teenagers but that such an experience is likely to negatively impact their educational achievement.
